Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Associate III to join the Marine Chemistry & Geochemistry Department.

We are seeking a self-driven microbiologist, bioprocess scientist or engineer for a fast-paced, team-oriented research project that seeks to recreate the lipid digestive processes conducted by whales within the laboratory environment. The ideal candidate will have expertise in microbial physiology and/or metabolic modeling and experience with bioreactors and/or microbial digestion experiments. The responsibilities include designing and conducting experiments, applying optimization techniques, documenting processes and analyzing data. The individual must be creative and possess strong critical thinking and troubleshooting skills. The individual must have strong communication skills and be team oriented, as these skills are essential to the fast-moving pace of the project.

This position is full-time and is renewable annually depending on performance and funding availability. Job Description

Essential Functions & Duties

This person will bring bioprocess and bioreactor engineering experience to the Apprill in the Marine Chemistry and Geochemistry Department. We seek a self-driven scientist or engineer with experience in anaerobic microbiology, chemical engineering, or bioreactor engineering. The candidate must be self-driven and able to work in a group setting.

Routine duties will include (80% experimental, 10% meetings/reporting, 10% training assistant):

  • Designing and conducting anaerobic experiments to examine the ideal components for digestion of ocean lipids.

  • Developing a bioreactor capable of digesting marine lipids.

  • Troubleshooting designs and experiments and applying optimization techniques.

  • Documenting processes, analyzing data and providing regular (weekly) updates.

  • Communicating regularly with the team and bringing feedback into experiments.

  • Training students and staff in analysis methods when applicable.

  • Adhoc assignments and duties as deemed necessary by supervisor.

Non-Essential Functions

Required Experience & Education

  • Master’s in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biochemical Engineering (or a related field).

Preferred Experience & Education

  • PhD in Microbiology, Chemistry, Biochemistry, Chemical Engineering, or Biochemical Engineering (or a related field).

  • Bioreactor set-up and optimization

  • Anaerobic microbial cultivation and experimentation

  • Experience with analysis of metabolites or metabolic modeling

  • Experience with fast-paced projects

  • Interest in marine science

Additional Job Requirements

Physical Requirements

This position will include some lifting (up to 25 lbs) and the ability to manipulate items within an anaerobic hood environment.
