Permanent -Great American Outdoors Act Strike Force:The Great American Outdoors Act is a program formed in 2020 to reduce the maintenance backlog across the US Fish and Wildlife Service. Hired as part of a Strike Force, these positions will work alongside current staff to complete infrastructure projects such as levee reconstruction, facility repairs, building demolition, etc.These projects are in many locations, thus a significant amount of the incumbent's time will be spent traveling for multiday to projects across the contiguous U.S., Alaska, and Hawaii.As a Maintenance Worker your duties may include but are not limited to the following:
  • Operates a variety of gasoline or diesel powered engineering and construction equipment with wheeled or crawler- type traction and attachments.
  • Operates front-end attachments to remove piles of dirt, to load trucks, or for the digging of earth or gravel.
  • Operates bulldozer, angle dozer, or other attachments to push refuse into an open pit or to fill in demolished building sites and cover with earth, to clean ditches, to fill holes in dikes, or to excavate ditches and ponds.
  • Operates farm tractors with auxiliary equipment for farming, mowing, maintaining dikes, and other related activities.
  • Operates crawler tractor in forested terrain in piling of slash, clearing brush, small trees, tree stumps, and rocks, and developing fire lanes.
  • Conducts disking, chopping, mowing, rotovating, digging, loading and leveling to a rough grade for the purpose of ditch cleaning, culvert installation, creating and maintaining trails and fire breaks, patching potholes, and piling slash for various purposes.
  • Services equipment by checking fluids, lubricating, and performing safety checks.
  • Performs minor repairs which include replacement of hoses, belts, fuses, light bulbs, etc. that do not require dismantling large components of the equipment such as radiators, hydraulic tanks, alternators, tracks, etc.
  • Keeps written maintenance records for all equipment operated.

The refuge typically winters over 75,000 ducks and geese, 20,000 sandhill cranes, and 15-25 of the endangered whooping cranes. Visitation to the refuge exceeds 600,000 visitors per year for wildlife observation and photography, fishing, boating, bird watching, hunting, hiking, etc.Fern Cave, Key Cave, and Sauta Cave NWRs are all highly significant caves and contain several T&E species and are designated priority caves for the endangered grey bat. Mountain Longleaf NWR is about 9,500 acres of rare mountain longleaf habitat and contains other unique plant species such as the White fringeless orchid. Cahaba River NWR (3,500 acres) contains some of the most diverse T&E species of mussels and fish found in the U.S. Watercress Darter NWR was established to protect critical habitat for the endangered watercress darter.The adjacent cities of Decatur, Hartselle, Madison, and Huntsville provide excellent schools and plenty of activities for anyone to enjoy.
