Minderoo’s Oceans Focus Area aims to return the ocean to a healthy state, free from pollution and safeguarded for future generations. Our work will focus primarily in the Indo-Pacific region but we may also look at neighbouring regions (e.g. Eastern Pacific Ocean and Southern Ocean).

Alongside our peers and partners, we will advocate to scale promising practices and enact systems and policy change with a focus on:

Job Description

About the Opportunity

As the Principal, Research & Infrastructure, Oceans you will play a key role in championing our world class marine research, and will oversee the Implementation and monitoring of programs, and feasibility, scalability, and analysis of conversation Impact.

Leading a dynamic team of research and technical specialists to drive progress, innovation and results for research programs, your key responsibilities will Include:

  • Oversee the science-based research strategy for R&I and support the design and development of high-quality marine research projects.
  • Provide leadership in marine ecosystems research; conduct, coordinate and manage high quality research; provide expert technical guidance and scientific advice on marine ecosystems and related issues.
  • Provide mentoring and leadership to staff, encouraging a constructive and collaborative working environment.
  • Manage and maintain productive stakeholder relationships and partnerships.
  • Oversee the Minderoo Exmouth Research Laboratory (MERL) working closely with the MERL Operations Manager and MERL Principal Researcher (scientist).
  • Execute and monitor research programs, ensuring projects are delivered on time, within budget and with the desired outcomes aligned to conservation and impact objectives.

Qualifications

About You

To be successful you need to be analytical, with a strong understanding of scientific principles and processes.

In addition you will have:

  • MsC/ PhD in marine science, ecology or equivalent experience
  • Experience in leading and developing high achieving successful research and technical programs.
  • Experience in leading small, highly skilled teams
  • Experience in large-scale research strategic planning, analysis and reporting
  • Sound judgement and high-level decision making
  • Excellent communication and people management skills, with the ability to adapt to different working styles.

The role is Perth based with bimonthly domestic travel to our Exmouth research facility.
