The Role

Job Purpose

We’re currently looking for 3 enthusiastic, motivated and results-oriented researchers, to provide support to our Economics team in implementing the annual Seafish Processing Sector Data Collection exercise by collecting socio-economic data relating to UK seafood processing businesses. This will be telephone and desk-based based data collection.

This role is a fantastic opportunity to gain experience within the UK Seafood Sector and be part of our dynamic and busy Economics team. The Economics team collects data, produces analysis and evidence in the form of Seafish’s suite of economic reports, and provides advice to government and industry. This is a full-time, temporary role for up to 13 weeks. This is a UK-based role allowing the successful candidate to be home-based or work from our Edinburgh or Grimsby offices. Some travel may be required, including attending the first week of in-person training in Edinburgh and occasional team meetings held there. Travel expenses will be reimbursed. Extensive office-based training will be provided as part of the induction covering interview techniques, health & safety, and background of the seafood industry

There is a possibility of extension to work on another project within the Economics team, which can be discussed during or towards the end of this fixed-term contract.

Key responsibilities will include

Contributing to economic and financial data collection by undertaking telephone and desk-based interviews and research of the UK’s seafood processing sector as part of the UK Data Collection Framework (DCF) requirements.

  • Accurately entering data collected in databases to ensure that the Seafish Economics team data sets are comprehensive and robust.
  • Managing and undertaking data entry and quality checking elements of primary and secondary research projects, to deliver raw data suitable for analysis.
  • Encouraging participation by industry businesses in data collection exercises.
  • Enabling capture of enquiries and feedback from industry stakeholders.
  • Organising own research tasks, with guidance and advice from members of the team.
  • Ability to work flexibly, including occasional out-of-hours commitments, to maximise stakeholder participation.
  • Maintaining high standards of accuracy and data confidentiality.
  • Meeting agreed performance targets.
  • Following agreed scripts, processes, and data protection guidelines.

Key Relationships:

  • External: Participants/respondents taking part in telephone interviews, stakeholders involved in the census project, or other external partners as required.
  • Internal: The role will involve working closely with another experienced researcher in the team, as well as other members of the Economics team. The post-holder will report to the Project Manager and will also receive guidance and support from the Head of the Economics team.

The skills you will bring to the role

Skills & Experience Required

  • Excellent verbal communication skills in English and professional telephone manner. Researchers must be confident and effective communicators as the role requires significant interviewing of industry members.
  • Strong written communication skills in English, with high level of accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Good organisational and time-management skills.
  • Ability to work independently in a desk-based environment.
  • Comfortable working to deadlines and performance targets.
  • Confident engaging with a wide range of people from diverse backgrounds with strong rapport-building skills.
  • A-Level education (or equivalent).
  • Experience in a customer service or telephone-based role, with the ability to work to agreed performance targets.
  • Pro-active, self-motivated, and independent. Researchers are responsible for planning their own schedule and must be organised and able to work unsupervised on multiple tasks.

Desirable

  • Experience in social research methods and survey interviewing is desirable but not essential as full training will be provided.

About the Economics, Insight and Advice Team

The Seafish Economics, Insight and Advice team provides research and insight on a range of topics and sectors in the seafood industry including fishing, processing, trade and retail. We collect and analyse data on the economic performance of fishing and processing businesses, their workforce and seafood trade and retail among other areas. We provide key advice to Government, industry and researchers which helps inform fisheries, labour and trade policies. Our processing census survey is one of our key pieces of research looking into the health of the UK's seafood processing sector. The survey investigates the economic performance of the seafood processing supply chain and the demographics of the people who work in it. The outputs of our project allow us to better understand the social impact the industry has on coastal communities, our food supply chain but also enable an evidence based decision making and impact assessment tool for regulatory affairs.

  • This role sits within Job Family E in our pay structure and the salary for this post is £24,728 per year pro rata.
