Project Description
The Greening the Salish Sea: Decision Support Tools for Successful Pacific Salmon Habitat Recovery project will result in the creation of a Restoration Resource Hub of open-access informative resources and decision-support tools to guide and help co-ordinate adaptive nearshore habitat restoration approaches and strategies. Products will include State of Knowledge Documents on key habitats, mapping products, symposiums, and estuary profiles/report cards. By fostering multi-disciplinary approaches and enhancing education, awareness, and skills, this project will improve conservation efforts and protect valued fish species and habitats.
Position Overview
The Research Assistant will provide ongoing support to the Greening the Salish Sea project, under the PSF Marine Data Centre and the Marine Science Program, Nearshore and Estuary project.
Roles and Responsibilities
The Research Assistant’s key responsibilities include:
  • Assist in developing Estuary Report Cards products by:
  • Conducting thorough investigations to find and verify various datasets to relevant project goals using online databases, libraries, and other resources.
  • Gathering and organizing data from multiple sources.
  • Researching and obtaining historical photographs and using satellite imagery to assess geographical features and changes over time.
  • Supporting the creation of maps and interactive dashboards using GIS software and other mapping tools
  • Assist in performing data integration and transformation for various PSF Marine Data Centre initiatives by:
  • Searching for and collecting relevant data to create and update metadata records in the PSF Marine Data Portal to support the Ecosystem Indicator Project.
  • Assisting in back-end data centre operations, including revising and updating existing metadata records, as well as conducting website updates as needed.
  • Collaborating in a team to ensure smooth data integration and project support.
  • Monitoring data quality and assisting in optimizing data management practices.
Qualifications
  • Experience managing data in spatial and non-spatial formats (e.g., csv, file geodatabase).
  • Experience collating and acquiring data from various sources.
  • Experience reading/writing scientific reports.
  • Knowledge of estuaries and fish habitat.
  • Experience with GIS (e.g., QGIS, ArcGIS Pro) is an asset.
Reporting and Supervision
Reporting to and supervised by Paulina Salinas Ruiz (Data Integration Specialist) and Nicole Christiansen (Marine Science Program Coordinator), the Research Assistant is responsible for undertaking all work identified by them and meeting or exceeding the standard of care set by them.
