What: Ocean Visions was created to confront and solve big, complex threats to the ocean. We seek an energetic, collaborative, creative individual to lead a new programmatic area of our work: regenerating key parts of the ocean-cryosphere system that have been damaged by climate change and its related stresses (ocean acidification, deoxygenation, etc.).
Why: Our best collective efforts to date to decarbonize, and our nascent efforts to remove carbon from the atmosphere and ocean, have been woefully insufficient to address the existential threats that climate change poses to Earth’s life support systems. While many are working heroically to increase the pace and scale of decarbonization across all economic sectors, and others to add direct carbon removal into the action plan, the time lag between those actions and cooling the planet will be large. Meanwhile, critical components of the ocean-climate system, such as Arctic sea ice, coral reefs, and continental ice sheets are at risk of reaching critical levels of loss of function that may lead to rapid and sometimes irreversible changes. Some of these transformations may trigger positive feedback loops that accelerate warming and further damage to other “vital organs” of the ocean-climate system. For each of these critical components of the ocean-climate system at risk of dangerous transformation, there is an urgent need to systematically and transparently identify, assess, and evaluate the range of interventions potentially capable of prolonging and/or regenerating the function of these systems. This is a relatively new field of exploration that will require the involvement of a great many disciplines, sectors, and perspectives.
Who: We seek a broadly trained natural or physical scientist to help lead work on identifying and cataloguing innovations and interventions that may prolong and/or regenerate the health and function of critical parts of the ocean-climate system, and which require additional research and development to determine their ultimate efficacy. This person must have exceptional analytical and social skills. Experience working in Arctic systems or other systems at high risk of state shifts is strongly desired. The ideal candidate will be bold and thoughtful; a critical thinker who adheres to the best available science. This person must possess the ability to synthesize large amounts of information and produce usable outputs. Passion for addressing and solving the climate crisis is essential. Familiarity with the application of technology and innovation to solve complex problems is necessary. Thinking outside of the box that we are in is essential. This Program Lead will report to the Science Director and work collaboratively with all Ocean Visions staff.
Required Qualifications: • Master’s or PhD in one of the following, or related, areas: climate science; environmental science; Earth system science, environmental, chemical, and systems engineering; geophysics; socio-ecological systems; environmental policy • Experience working with diverse interests and sectors to solve complex environmental problems, demonstrated by at least four years of relevant work experience • Demonstrated ability to come up to speed quickly on new subject matter areas • Comfortable with technology and engineering concepts • Experience with facilitation across diverse areas of expertise, expert elicitation, and knowledge synthesis • Excellent attention to detail and strong project design and management skills. • Excellent written and oral communication skills • Ability to plan, prioritize, and organize a diverse workload, while adjusting to periodic changes to account for new opportunities • Expert analytical skills • Ability to operate with independence, meet deadlines, and fulfill commitments Desired Qualifications: • Familiarity with polar science, especially Arctic systems • Familiarity with concepts related to ecological and socio-ecological tipping points • Experience working on science policy • Experience with innovation and scaling of technology and innovation
Location, Hours, and Travel: This is a regular full-time remote position. Applicants must be U.S.-based, legally authorized to work in the U.S., and available to work standard business hours of a continental U.S. time zone. Must be willing and able to travel insofar as COVID-19 restrictions and safety measures allow, and position may require international travel.
Compensation: The salary range for this position is $80,000-$120,000, commensurate with the candidate’s specific skills, years of experience, and unique background.
