Who we are: OceanHub Africa (OHA) is on a mission to inspire and support ocean-minded start-ups with the express aim of nurturing an environmentally conscious and profitable economy that effectively mitigates the effects of global warming as well as oceans’ overexploitation and pollution. Your Role:
Fundraising and management:
- Sponsorship mapping for startups and OHA (including application support for the latter)
- Fundraising support for startups and financial coaching.
- Raising funds for OHA.
- Support management and reporting of grant funding received.
- Strategic financial planning and due diligence support for OHA and its startups.
- Assist the team in the creation of new partnerships and assist in adjusting current partnerships to better fit the next acceleration programs and other OHA’s activities.
- Lead communication with investor relations, including drafting Board communications and fundraising financial materials
- Construct and refine business models, financial forecasts and operational goals that maximise our current and future ROIs
- Contribute to OHA’s client portfolio supervision (financial aspect)
- Provide strategic recommendations on operational and financial initiatives based on data, market analysis, and previous actions
- Support in promoting Blue Finance in Africa (thought leadership, communication points, etc) Strategy and Management consultancy:
- Support in strategy and management consulting jobs of OHA, especially regarding innovative finance and Blue investments Main advantages:

Fixed-term contract - Business Finance Specialist
Job specifications: OHA is looking for a Business Finance Specialist on an initial fixed term contract to: 1) maintain the leadership position of OHA in its ecosystem as more ocean hubs emerge, 2) participate to the fundraising efforts to sustain OHA’s growth, 3) champion strategic and financial planning, business forecasting, and cash flow management 4) deliver on OHA’s Blue Economy consultancy missions as well as to provide support to OHA’s accelerated startups.
You are passionate about the ocean and its Blue Economy You thrive to support and see the growth of impact for-profit ventures You are business-driven and a strategic thinker You are mastering excel spreadsheets, love the financial side of the game and are not scared of financial engineering and data architecture. Skills and experience:
- Postgraduate in Finance, Business Management, Entrepreneurship or other relevant fields with 2 to 5 years’ experience in business administration and/or finance
- Excellent analytical skills and strategic thinking
- Team spirit
- Solid understanding of business metrics and processes in a startup
- Strong innovative, impact and sustainable finance interests The following conditions apply:
- From Jan 10th, 2022 to Nov 30th, 2022 - some flexibility on dates
- Full time - 40h/week: 8:30 am to 5:30 pm, 1h lunch break
- 12 days paid leave in addition to public holidays (following the official South African calendar) – based on the above start and end dates.
- Office address: The V&A Waterfront, Cape Town 8002.
- A computer, a mobile phone are necessary but not provided. Internet connection when working remotely is a necessary requirement on the Business Finance Specialist's own account.
- Gross monthly remuneration of R25,000-R35,000 CTC. In addition, variable remuneration of up to 10% of gross annual salary will be awarded based on overall annual performance.

More about us: We are based in Cape Town, at virtually the crossroads of three oceans but operate pan-African online and through a network of local supportive stakeholders. The first acceleration programme was successfully completed in 2020 and saw 6 startups of different stages (prototyping to growth stage), technologies (digital and hardware) and industries (aquaculture - fisheries, shipping - ship-building, marine renewables - biotechnologies, coastal tourism - ocean-sports, awareness - education, data - exploration) graduating during the Ocean Innovation Africa Summit in Nov 2020 (see more on the startups here, their feedback here and video of the event here). Our second cohort started earlier in April with 6 new promising African-based, ocean-minded, impact-for-profit innovative businesses in offshore wind, sustainable fisheries, sustainable agriculture impact ocean biodiversity, and ocean plastic circular economy - graduation took place during the in-person OIA summit 2021 - endorsed by the UN Ocean Decade (highlights). OHA is collaborating with a range of partners such as the IUCN, WWF, Mission Blue, 1% for the planet, Dassault Systèmes, Amazon, Sigfox, French and African Diplomacies, UN's Ocean Decade, African and European DFIs and International Universities. We all come together because we believe in the great - and untapped - potential of Africa's blue economy but we also see the threats of irresponsible ocean economic growth. By working to inspire more entrepreneurs, entice more private investors and catalyze more partnerships, we strive to increase the development and adoption of new sustainable technologies and policies to place the continent at the forefront of a decidedly more sustainable ocean economy. Over the past two years OHA has accomplished the milestones and co-led the initiatives listed below as the first (and only) entrepreneurial support organisation in Africa for ocean-impact : ● We have run two acceleration programs and now have 12 ocean-impact startups in our portfolio. www.oceanhub.africa ● We launched a convening platform with the World Economic Forum for stakeholders of the ocean innovation space in Africa ● We initiated and actively participated in founding an international coalition of incubators and VCs focusing on Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Life Below Water) responding to the Transformation paper of the Ocean Panel and in line with UN's Ocean Decade recommendations: www.1000oceanstartups.org ● OHA is a cofounding organisation of the Great Blue Wall initiative aiming at replicating the Great Green Wall initiative and raising $1.5bn to connect and protect a chain of seascapes in the Western Indian Ocean to further Blue Economy Growth, to stand against biodiversity loss and fight climate change
