In partnership with Cape Fear Community College (Marine Technology Program) and supported by the NOAA Marine Debris Program. Interns spend 12 weeks in summer working with staff out of the Southeast region office in Wrightsville Beach. The Deadline to apply for this Intern Position has passed. Description: Hands-on experience with efforts to prevent, reduce, remove, recycle, and dispose of large-scale marine debris, Abandoned and Derelict Vessels (ADVs), and Derelict Fishing Gear (DFG); work alongside specialized ADV removal contractors and disposal experts, and commercial fishers collecting and removing debris; collaborate with partner agencies, community members, and local governments on policy, logistics, and regulatory skills; complete a special project (e.g., practical guides, manuals, or outreach products). Duration: June–August (12 weeks); 2026; 30 hrs/week. Compensation: taxable stipend of $8,600 divided into three equal monthly payments (subject to final approval). Eligibility: NC native/resident attending CFCC and enrolled in Marine Technology; completing second and final year in spring/summer of internship year; Pell Grant eligible (DACA and undocumented students eligible). Competencies: experience working outdoors/on water; able to work on boats, in marsh, and office; enthusiasm for engaging with contractors, fishers, community members, and policymakers; ability to take direction; strong work ethic; ability to lift 50 lbs and work extended periods in coastal environments.
