Would you like to be an integral part of monitoring tropical coral reef ecosystems and studying climate change in action? Does working with data and how it is gathered, stored, archived, and shared appeal to you? If so, the Cooperative Institute for Marine and Atmospheric Research (CIMAR) is recruiting for a Database System Developer position within the NOAA/PIFSC Ecosystems Sciences Division based in Honolulu, HI.
This position will be with our Data Services Team and focuses on providing advanced programming and relational database support for marine ecosystem science; the team is responsible for guiding the division’s holdings through the data life cycle to improve data integrity and accessibility. This includes collection, capture, processing, documentation, archiving, and maintenance of datasets in a relational database management system. Furthermore, the team develops tools such as applications as well as programs to improve data management and produce end-products.The team works closely with scientists and provides advanced data systems support before, during, and after research missions; duties are related to securing data integrity and security, as well as following and enforcing data governance rules established by various agencies.
In addition to the team's responsibilities, the Database Systems Developer position’s role focuses on reviewing and optimizing the current database architecture which integrates historical, current, and future datasets across various data types including oceanographic, biological, and ecological data. Keen attention to detail and the ability to synthesize scripts and programs to work within a database are a must. Also imperative are communication, IT support, and time management skills.
This position can also include participating in a research cruise in the tropical pacific for approximately 1 month per year to support our division’s data collection and community outreach efforts.
The position requires five to seven (5-7) years of professional level work experience in the design, development and support of relational database applications with client/server databases, including enterprise-wide database management systems, web applications and graphical user interfaces for relational databases; operational experience in the primary data management functional areas of data collection, data capture, data processing, data maintenance, data archival, and data dissemination; operational experience with data manipulation, data parsing, and data auditing and managing large scientific data sets including geographic and time series data. The position is open for individuals who have a Bachelor's Degree in Computer, Biological, Physical, or Library Sciences and have a desire to better assist marine scientists to interact with their data.
