Founded in 1987 by the late David Packard, the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute (MBARI) is a nonprofit oceanographic research center advancing marine science and engineering to understand our changing ocean. Located in Moss Landing, California, the heart of the Monterey Bay National Marine Sanctuary, MBARI offers ready access to the open ocean and deep sea. Ongoing research programs range across autonomous and remotely operated underwater vehicle systems, control technologies, ocean physics, chemistry, geology, biology, ocean instrumentation, and information management. MBARI hosts approximately 200 employees, with shore facilities that include state-of-the-art science and engineering laboratories, manufacturing and electrical fabrication shops, and dock facilities for MBARI vessels.
MBARI is seeking a motivated Mechanical Technician/Fabricator that will bring experience and drive to our manufacturing group. This group works with other scientists, engineers, and marine operations personnel on the design, fabrication, testing, and maintenance of various platforms and instruments for ocean science research. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, demonstrating exceptional problem-solving capabilities and the ability to work independently to overcome challenges and complete tasks.
Tasks could include, but are not limited to:
• Design and fabrication of parts using a variety of tools and equipment
• Assembly, repair, and/or modification of equipment and instrumentation
• Mobilization and demobilization of gear to support deployments and recoveries
• At-sea work on board a variety of vessels
• Disassembly and cleaning of recovered platforms and instrumentation
• Rigging and working around cranes
• Maintenance of equipment and shop spaces
Required qualifications:
• Previous experience with mechanical assembly and fabrication techniques
• Experience with mills and lathes – manual or CNC
• Proficiency with hand tools and shop tools and equipment
• Excellent work ethic and ability to work independently or within groups
• Ability to deliver work on tight schedules
• Ability to occasionally work at sea for specified periods of time
• Ability to interpret basic mechanical drawings and/or sketches
• Ability to lift 50 lbs.
Desired qualifications:
• Experience with press brakes, waterjet cutters, laser cutters and other equipment.
• TIG and MIG welding experience.
• Sheet metal work experience.
• Forklift certification/experience.
• Experience with adhesives and potting compounds.
• 3D printer operation experience (SLA and/or FDM).
• Shipboard/small boat operation experience.
• Familiarity with a variety of materials (plastics, metals, composites).
