Who are we?

Mercator Ocean International has been developing operational oceanography activities for nearly 25 years, as part of its public interest mission to preserve the ocean.

Many scientific and societal challenges must be met to ensure a sustainable ocean, whether they concern the environment, biodiversity, climate change, the blue economy or education. To meet these challenges, Mercator Ocean designs, develops, operates and maintains state-of-the-art digital systems capable of describing, analyzing and forecasting the state of the ocean in 3D, continuously and in real time. The scientific information is then translated to be accessible to all, whether they are public or commercial services, political decision makers, industrialists, associations, NGOs, teachers or citizens. Mercator Ocean International thus combines scientific excellence and social commitment on a daily basis.

As a non-profit company under multinational governance (ES, FR, GB, IT, NO), we work in a climate of trust with our ten shareholder partners, all key players in the development of European oceanography.

About the job:

We are looking for an enthusiastic scientist sharing Mercator ocean’s ambition and objectives.

You will develop regional climate projections of the marine physical and biogeochemical environment over the north-eastern Atlantic and assess future changes in key ocean state indicators.

You will join an exciting European project aiming at advancing the understanding of physical and ecosystem processes in European seas to develop ocean models downscaled at regional level. These regional models will provide refined information on future decadal-to-multidecadal changes of the marine environment and related impacts, fundamental for climate policy and decision making.

You will notably be in charge of:

  • Producing regional ocean climate simulations (over the past decades and 21st century) with NEMO-PISCES over the north-eastern Atlantic Ocean using an existing configuration,
  • Developing the modelling framework and advancing the understanding of the role of different processes in projected ocean climate changes by performing sensitivity experiments,
  • Evaluating and analyzing the corresponding regional ocean climate simulations,
  • Evaluating prediction skills of retrospective and actual decadal predictions performed by partners based on the same regional ocean model,
  • Informing the development of reference protocols for the production and evaluation of regional ocean climate projections and decadal predictions,
  • Developing regional ocean monitoring indicators of the future state of the marine environment (e.g., marine heat waves, sea level rise and extreme coastal sea levels, plankton biomasses, oxygen).

At Mercator Ocean, you will join the Research & Development department and its Ocean Climate team. You will also interact with other teams and departments and will join a multinational environment. Activities will also be co-designed and coordinated with other initiatives and stakeholders (e.g., Copernicus, CLIVAR, CORDEX, United Nations Decade on Ocean Science) to prepare the future uptake and to build capacity for regionally downscaled ocean decadal and climate projections.

You may be required to travel abroad for project meetings and conferences.

Assets for success:

We are looking for highly motivated, rigorous candidates with good analysis, organizational, communication and inter-personal skills.

You have a PhD in oceanography or climate sciences, or you have a Master's degree or equivalent with at least three years' professional experience in these fields.

You have advanced skills in programming languages (in particular Fortran and Python), scientific computing and experience on using supercomputers.

You wish to contribute your technical and scientific ideas to ambitious projects.

You are fluent in English (written and spoken).

Type of contract: Fixed-term contract with a defined purpose (36 months), Full time. Desired start date: 01/01/2025. Benefits: Flexible working hours, luncheon vouchers, paid leave and "RTT" (9 weeks), teleworking (2 days/week), sustainable mobility package.

Mercator Ocean is an equal opportunity employer.
