Ocean Job Board

Marine Stewardship Council
The Vacancy
Are you a passionate advocate for sustainable fishing practices? Do you want to make a significant impact on the future of our oceans? If so, this could be the opportunity for you!
Underpinning the Marine Stewardship Council’s (MSC) work and ecolabel program are the rigorous standards we set and maintain: the Fishery Standard and the Chain of Custody Standard. These standards are critical to our mission of recognising and rewarding sustainable fishing practices worldwide. Reporting to the Chief Standards Officer, the Fisheries Standard Director builds on the achievements over the past decade of MSC’s scientific research and standard setting, and plays a vital role in ensuring that our fisheries standards reflect best practices in fisheries management and are consistently implemented across our global programs. The postholder plays a critical role in maintaining the credibility and effectiveness of MSC’s programs as they continue to expand and evolve.
We’re looking for a highly motivated individual with substantial experience at a senior level in fisheries science or management relevant to the MSC Fisheries Standard. They will have extensive operational experience in the fisheries sector, excellent written and spoken communication skills, and a strong reputation in standard-setting and policymaking. A post-graduate degree (ideally a master’s or PhD) is preferred, and they should demonstrate their empathy and interest in the MSC’s mission.
An experienced leader and manager, the Fisheries Standard Director oversees the Fisheries Standard team, working collaboratively with colleagues from across the organisation, and with external stakeholders. They also contribute to the broader strategic development and collective management of the MSC, supporting the achievement of its mission to recognise and reward sustainable fishing practices and drive positive change in global fisheries.
This is an exciting opportunity for an outstanding individual to make a lasting impact on the MSC’s work and the future of sustainable seafood.
We’re an international organisation and our employees all demonstrate a level of cultural awareness, and value the diverse views and approaches relevant to the MSC program.
The MSC is committed to flexible working. The successful candidate will need to work from the London office for a minimum of 50% of their working time each month. The remaining time can be worked from home. During the onboarding process, hybrid work may require more in-office work than remote work.
Weekend work and some international travel may be required in this role.
Please be aware, we are only able to progress with candidates who already have the right to work in the location specified in this advert.

Working at the MSC
The MSC’s vision is for the world’s oceans to be teeming with life, and seafood supplies safeguarded for this and future generations. Today, the impacts of overfishing and climate change pose an even greater threat to the ocean and fish stocks. Through our internationally recognised certification and ecolabeling program, well-managed sustainable fisheries are recognised and rewarded throughout the seafood supply chain. Over 700 fisheries around the world, representing 19% of the annual global marine catch, are now engaged in the MSC program and MSC certified and labelled seafood products are now available in over 66 countries. Through partnerships and collective endeavour, we are on a mission to end overfishing.
