This role is based from an MSC office in either Berlin, Madrid, or Cape Town.
The Vacancy
Is your background in sustainable fisheries management and marine protection?
Do you want to work at the interface of science and management to help protect the oceans and safeguard seafood supplies?
If so, this could be the opportunity for you: developing and implementing a standard for well-managed, sustainable fisheries, with a particular focus on tuna fisheries.
The MSC is currently recruiting for a Fisheries Standard Manager.
You’ll have the opportunity to contribute to the running of the MSC’s Fisheries Standard and oversee the certification of fisheries by third-party auditors.
You would join a close-knit team who develop the Fisheries Standard and are responsible for more than 400 fisheries in the MSC Program, ensuring that our requirements are applied correctly and consistently.
This post has a particular focus on the MSC’s tuna strategy and technical work related to Principle 1 of the Fisheries Standard. As such, the ideal candidate will have professional experience fisheries management, assessment or monitoring.
Some of the key tasks that you will be involved in are:
- Oversight of a portfolio of fisheries that are undergoing assessment or annual review by third-party auditors
- Technical review of assessment reports, ensuring that MSC’s requirements and processes are being applied correctly
- Development of the MSC Fisheries Standard and related certification processes, keeping pace with global best practice
- Supporting colleagues and stakeholders in understanding and communicating the MSC’s requirements to a range of audiences.
- Training auditors in the correct application of the MSC’s requirements and assessment processes
To be successful in this role you will have professional experience in fisheries science or management. This includes a good working knowledge of the development or implementation of harvest strategies, harvest control rules, stock assessment or fisheries monitoring.
As the role is focused on the MSC’s tuna strategy, you should be able to demonstrate a good knowledge of current issues in tuna fisheries.
We are looking for a highly motivated individual with the ability to balance a varied workload. You will also have:
- a strong teamwork ethic and excellent project planning, organisation, and time management skills
- experience working with stakeholders and other external parties to develop policy
- a track record of successfully managing relationships with stakeholders, collaborators, and colleagues

The MSC is committed to flexible working. The successful candidate will need to work from an MSC office for a minimum of 50% of their working time each month The remaining time can be worked from home. During the onboarding process, hybrid work may require more in-office work than remote work.
