DATA SCIENTIST

Our Data Scientist will go on maternity leave in September, and we are looking for a temporary hire, with a strong possibility of permanent employment from May, 2024.

As our Data Scientist, you will provide technical expertise and hands-on skills in designing, developing, testing and maintaining our Ocean Data Platform.

Working remotely in Norway is an option, but we need to see you regularly.

Job purpose: Join our data team and collaborate closely with our data science and engineering team to develop an efficient framework for utilizing ocean data.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct extensive data analysis on various ocean data sources including open data from science institutions, regulatory bodies, and ocean industries
  • Evaluate and screen datasets for quality and relevance before integrating them into the Ocean Data Platform
  • Collaborate with stakeholders to understand their needs and translate them into data-driven solutions
  • Collaborate with team members and partners to design and develop new data products such as map layers, indicators, visualizations, and derived data sets
  • Develop and maintain data pipelines in Prefect using Python
  • Ensure that data storage and data management through Azure Storage and Cognite Data Fusion (CDF Files) are optimally utilized and maintained
  • Conduct research to stay updated on the latest advancements and trends in data science, specifically those relevant to ocean governance
  • Provide technical guidance and support to the rest of the data engineering/science team and other team members


Required qualifications and experience

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Statistics, Applied Math, or a related field.
  • Proven experience (3+ years) as a Data Scientist or similar role, ideally within an environmental, marine, oceanography, or relevant scientific domain.
  • Strong knowledge of Python and experience with libraries designed for large datasets, such as GeoPandas, ZARR, or XARRAY.
  • Experience with JupyterHub and data science in the cloud
  • Knowledge of data pipeline creation, preferably using Prefect or similar type of frameworks
  • Understanding of machine learning models, algorithms, and statistical methods.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to develop innovative data-driven solutions.
  • Good communication skills and ability to explain complex concepts to non-technical team members and stakeholders.
  • Experience in developing and implementing data products
  • Genuine interest in ocean sustainability and dedication to HUB Ocean's mission.
  • Fluent in English, with good communication and interpersonal skills
