The Ocean unites us and our passion is to protect it. Coral Gardeners, a registered nonprofit based in Moorea, French Polynesia, started in 2017 as a group of young surfers and fishermen coming together to protect and restore their home reef. We’re now made up of an international collective of scientists, engineers, creators, and advocates determined to protect and enhance the reef by revolutionizing ocean conservation and generating collaborative action around the world. THE JOB
Coral Gardeners is seeking a project manager to lead and oversee the planning and implementation of a high-capacity onshore coral nursery in collaboration with The Nature Conservancy. The long-term objectives of this nursery are to rapidly scale up the capacity of the Coral Gardeners to grow and outplant corals allowing reef-scale restoration, and to improve the outcome of coral restoration by learning how nursery conditions, coral species and genotypes, and environmental conditions at the ourplanting site influence the survival of corals. The project manager will be responsible for working with local and international partners to design the facility, obtain necessary permits, and engage contractors to successfully set up and operate a first-of-its-kind coral nursery that leverages cutting edge automation tools. Once the facility is ready-to-run, the project manager role should shift into the general manager of the high-capacity coral nursery operation.
Your responsibilities will include:
- Manage all relationships between the Coral Gardeners and The Nature Conservancy, other project partners, relevant government agencies, research institutions, and community stakeholders
- Obtain relevant permits for the nursery construction and operation
- Design nursery in close collaboration with the Coral Gardeners, The Nature Conservancy and their partners
- Identify, engage, and manage local contractor to build the nursery
- Handle logistics of shipping and receiving specialized equipment from outside French Polynesia
- Work with local research institutions, Coral Gardeners’ restoration team, and The Nature Conservancy to determine the types and quantities of coral to be grown in the nursery
- Work with local research institutions, Coral Gardeners’ Head of Science, and The Nature Conservancy to identify synergies and collaborative use of the nursery
- Work with local stakeholders, Coral Gardeners’ Head of Philanthropy , and The Nature Conservancy to identify and secure long-term funding for the operation of the nursery
- Once set up, manage the operation of the coral farm to achieve the restoration goals established together with the Coral Gardeners’ restoration team and Head of Science
- Recruit, with the help of the Coral Gardeners team, the staff to run the coral farm and reach the agreed-upon production and transplantation goals
- Report to the Coral Gardeners about the nursery’s performance
- Execute the fundraising strategy for the operation of the nursery in collaboration with the Head of Philanthropy
WORK QUALIFICATIONS
- Bachelor’s degree in science and technology
- 5 years of experience working in the ocean technology field
- Comprehensive knowledge in aquaculture/agriculture infrastructure or related field
- Experience working with government agencies and universities
- Experience in implementing an aquaculture facility
- Familiar with international shipping and importation processes
- Experience in restoration project design and management
- Ability to interpret and analyze data including familiarity with data analysis programs such as Anaconda, Python and Panda library
- Proficiency in use of design and engineering software such as Autodesk Fusion 360
- Fluent in written and spoken English
- Working proficiency in French
