Position Summary:

The Dive Staff at Catalina Sea Camp are responsible for providing diving programs for children who are age 12-17. They must be knowledgeable of all dive requirements, as well as develop, organize, and teach (or assist with teaching) scuba diving courses as assigned. Duties must be in accordance with Catalina Sea Camp and NAUI structure/standards. Dive Staff are responsible for all aspects (as assigned and within an individuals scope) of scuba diving and freediving for Catalina Sea Camp.

Duties & Responsibilities

Primary Responsibilities/Essential Functions:

  1. Develop, organize, and teach (or assist with teaching) scuba diving courses as assigned. Course offerings range from Try Dive/Discover Scuba through Master Diver, including some specialties. Snorkeling through beginner freediving courses are also offered. Other duties assigned may include hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and some science labs.
  2. Keep all program areas neat, clean, and SAFE.
  3. Develop supplementary material for programs as needed.
  4. Adhere to safety rules, company policies, and procedures for the well-being of campers and staff.
  5. Facilitate operations on the dive deck, including filling cylinders, organizing program equipment, ensuring cleanliness, and assisting in incidents and emergencies.
  6. As assigned, act as Instructor/Divemaster, Dive Locker Coordinator, and Lifeguard, as well as Head Divemaster aboard our diving vessels.
  7. Keep comprehensive records of all dives with campers. Complete the paperwork required to issue certifications.
  8. Comply with NAUI and Catalina Sea Camp standards, policies, and procedures when teaching classes.
  9. Attend all meetings, leadership training, and instructional sessions.
  10. Assist with camper arrival/departure procedures as assigned on arrival and departure days.
  11. Provide and/or attend evening programs and activities when necessary or assigned.
  12. Generate ongoing enthusiasm and participation in summer camp activities.
  13. Work the necessary hours to get the job done, and assist other departments when available.
  14. Assist with between-session clean-ups.
  15. Follow and enforce all camp rules and policies.
  16. Other duties as assigned by the Dive Director.

Other Responsibilities/Supportive Functions:

  1. Must be able to effectively work with the campers, supervisors, and other staff.
  2. Ability and willingness to communicate any problems with staff or campers to the Dive Director.
  3. Good physical condition with the mobility, visual and auditory skills to maintain control of 8-15 campers in a variety of environments (in the water, during learning sessions, on hikes, etc.).
  4. Ability to properly respond to emergency situations and enforce appropriate safety rules.
  5. Knowledge and ability to teach dive classes as assigned in all open-water environments.

The employee member is subject to environmental conditions found working indoors/outdoors. The employee member is frequently subject to extreme heat, with temperatures up to 110 degrees while moving around in and outside of camp. The employee member is frequently subject to loud noise when working in or around the camp. The employee member is subject to hazards which includes proximity to moving mechanical parts, equipment found in kitchens and food service areas, sharp objects, and exposure to cleaning chemicals and animals. Other hazards may include slick floors and hot stoves, cookware, plate ware or glassware. The employee member is occasionally subject to atmospheric condition such as fumes, odors, or dusts.

  8. The opportunity to develop teaching and leadership skill as well as interpersonal and management skills.

Salary Range $500-575 per week depending on seasons worked

Qualifications

Qualifications (relevant experience, education and training):

  1. Must be at least 21 years of age.
  2. Must be an active status NAUI Dive Leader and equipped in accordance with NAUI standards OR meet prerequisites for NAUI Leadership courses including those for Divemaster or Instructor.
  3. Possess passion for scuba diving and/or freediving.
  4. Previous experience working with youth and a desire to work with them.
  5. Must have strong communication and human relation skills.
  6. Must be able to work and live well in a remote setting.
  7. Able to work closely with other staff members and work as a team.
  8. Self-directed learner, planner, and worker.
  9. Good character, integrity, flexibility, enthusiasm, and patience.
  10. Able to accept supervision and guidance.
  11. Must carry dive accident insurance (ex: DAN).
  12. Have current First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer (on-site training provided).
  13. Lifeguard certification preferred (on-site training provided).
  14. Valid U.S. drivers license preferred.
