Oceans Ecosystem Navigator

COAST is driving innovation in Pacific Canada’s Blue Economy by:

  • Helping industry find commercial solutions to key challenges facing the ocean sector
  • Supporting start-ups and new ventures
  • Engaging Indigenous leadership in the Blue Economy; and
  • Attracting talent, capital and partnerships to grow businesses in British Columbia.

COAST is seeking an Oceans Ecosystem Navigator who will be seconded to the Ocean Startup Project (OSP) on an annual basis to:

  • Serve as a proactive ambassador for OSP, actively promoting its mission and initiatives, and providing guidance and assistance to entrepreneurs;
  • Engage in outreach efforts to connect with current and potential entrepreneurs, partners, and stakeholders, evaluating opportunities, raising awareness, and offering support;
  • Present the mission and initiatives of the OSP in front of audiences at events around British Columbia;
  • Co-lead the planning and coordination of programs, training, outreach, events and competitions for OSP, ensuring alignment with program objectives and budget constraints; and,
  • Collaborate with navigators in other Canadian areas to ensure consistent application of OSP mission and initiatives.

The OSP propels Canada as the top destination for ocean entrepreneurs, driving innovation across the ocean economy. The OSP mission is to transform Canada into a global hub where ocean startups can thrive, from inception to global market presence. Leveraging a network that includes Canada’s Ocean Supercluster, the Atlantic Canada Opportunities Agency, and partners from across the country, the OSP bolsters Canada’s innovation ecosystem for ocean-focused startups.

This is an exciting opportunity for a person looking to establish themselves in a growing and exciting sector. Both the OSP and COAST teams are small groups of dedicated people trying to make a difference. To be successful in this role, you should possess:

  1. Post-secondary degree or certificate in business or communications, or the equivalent training and/or experience
  2. At least 5-years experience in business development and customer engagement, with a track record of organizing successful in-person and virtual events
  3. Strong interpersonal skills to establish meaningful business relationships and excellent verbal and written communication and presentation abilities.
  4. Experience in public speaking and confident to convey information in an audience setting.
  5. General knowledge of the technology and ocean sectors with an understanding of the dynamics of startups and entrepreneurship.
  6. Experience in a startup environment, ocean technology environment, or related field is considered an asset.

Flexible work arrangements are available as much of the work with the OSP will be remote.  COAST has office facilities in Victoria, BC but the proponent can be based in any major centre along the British Columbia coast.  In-Province travel is expected to conferences and events and some out of province / country travel may be required.  On offer is an attractive remuneration package and exposure to the Canadian innovation/start-up sector.

In accordance with the BC Pay Transparency Act, the expected salary range for this position is between $65,000 and $85,000 per year.  Initially this will be a one-year contract position with the possibility of two further one-year extensions.
