Position Description
Title: Antarctic and Southern Ocean Coalition Norway Campaigner
Location: Norway, remote
About ASOC:
A coalition of over 30 NGOs dedicated to Antarctic environmental protection, ASOC represents the environmental community at Antarctic governance meetings and works to promote important Antarctic conservation goals. ASOC is currently promoting the creation of a representative system of large Marine Protected Areas in the Southern Ocean. ASOC monitors various issues that impact the Antarctic, including climate change, tourism, fisheries management, biological prospecting and illegal, unreported, and unregulated (IUU) fishing. Additional initiatives include calling for stricter regulation of all vessels operating in the Antarctic, implementing precautionary management measures for krill, regulating Antarctic tourism, and monitoring the implementation of the Environment Protocol to the Antarctic Treaty. ASOC employs contractors all over the world who are experts on Antarctic environmental issues and who work closely with the countries who have a major presence in the Antarctic. ASOC also raises public awareness through our website, social media, media releases and advocacy initiatives.
Job Description:
We are seeking a passionate and experienced environmental campaigner with expertise in Norwegian government, politics, and NGOs to drive advocacy and campaign efforts for Southern Ocean conservation in Norway. This role will focus on building support for the creation of new marine protected areas in the Southern Ocean through policy advocacy, public engagement, coalition building and grassroots organizing.
This position will report to the MPA Campaign Director.
Key Responsibilities
Campaign Strategy & Delivery
Design, lead, and implement a high-impact campaign focused on Southern Ocean marine protection
Translate complex scientific research into compelling campaign messages and policy recommendations
Develop clear goals, timelines, and measurable outcomes for the campaign
Policy & Advocacy
Influence Norwegian ocean conservation policies in the Commission for the Conservation of Antarctic Marine Living Resources (CCAMLR) and within the Antarctic Treaty System generally
Engage with the different Norwegian stakeholders involved in activities in the Southern Ocean
Engage with relevant ministries, policymakers, and members of civil society to advocate for strong marine environmental protections in Antarctica
Monitor Norwegian political developments related to oceans, fisheries, climate, and the Southern Ocean
Public Engagement & Communications
Act as a spokesperson for the campaign in media, public events, and conferences
Support digital, grassroots, and community engagement initiatives
Work closely with communications teams to develop narratives, visuals, and media pieces
Collaboration & Networking
Cultivate relationships with NGOs, research institutions, and other partners
Work collaboratively with an international team of campaigners
Required Qualifications & Experience
Proven experience in environmental campaigning, advocacy, and policy work
Experience ocean conservation, polar science, Antarctic governance, or related fields
Established relationships and experience working with Norwegian government, particularly the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Fisheries, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and Ministry of Climate and Environment
Experience engaging with Norwegian media, NGOs, and civil society
Relevant degree (e.g. marine science, environmental policy, political science, international relations, etc.)
Fluency in Norwegian, excellent written and verbal communication skills in English

Compensation:
This is a part-time contract position and compensation will be determined based on the contractor’s hourly/daily rate. The contract is for a term period through December 31, 2026, with the possibility of extension pending continued funding support
