Job Description
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for an Innovation Management & Research Commercialization Intern to be part of WHOI’s OceanWorks initiative, designed to drive innovation, expand industry partnerships, and support commercialization efforts across the Institution. The intern will play an important role in supporting OceanWorks’s mission and contributing to WHOI’s long-term sustainability and impact in oceanographic science and technology. This position provides experiential learning for business students interested in science and technology partnerships, research commercialization, innovation strategy, and organizational development.
The Innovation Management & Research Commercialization Intern will work alongside OceanWorks leadership and program staff on:
Supporting the development and implementation of innovation strategies
Conducting market research and identifying commercialization opportunities
Assisting with preparation of grant proposals and funding applications
Collaborating with industry partners on commercialization plans
Participating in intellectual property and patent-related discussions
Supporting the Deep Blue Resource Center with commercialization tools and resources for PIs
Internship Details
Duration: ~18 weeks
Hours: 10–20 hours per week; minimum 1 day/week onsite in Woods Hole
Format: Hybrid, depending on project needs
Learning Outcomes
The intern will gain:
Hands-on experience in innovation management and research commercialization
Skills in market research, analysis, and commercialization strategy development
Experience preparing grant proposals and funding applications
Understanding of intellectual property management and patent processes
Practical experience collaborating with industry partners
Minimum Qualifications
Senior undergraduate business majors, MBA students, or recent graduates from accredited business schools

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION
Hourly Rate: $27.32/hour - $35.20/hour USD
The pay range provided for this position reflects the expected minimum and maximum base pay for new hires. Actual compensation will be determined based on factors such as relevant skills, experience, and qualifications, as well as internal equity and market conditions. In addition to base salary, eligible employees also receive a comprehensive benefits package.
