Job Description
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Shop Services Assistant to join our Facilities Department. Reporting to the Facilities Shop Supervisor, this role performs a variety of routine work associated with the areas of machining, maintenance, electrical and/or carpentry. This regular, full-time, non-exempt position is eligible for a full benefits package.
Essential Functions & Duties
Set up and operate standard machine tools (i.e. lathe, grinder, milling machine, drill press).
Work on drilling, tapping and deburring of machined parts.
Perform basic milling and turning operations.
Assist with inspection and diagnosis of repairs; may modify and repair existing equipment and components.
Perform routine carpentry tasks, painting and electrical tasks as designated.
Must be able to utilize basic hand tools associated with specific trade assigned (i.e. machining, electrical, or carpentry).
Required Experience & Education
High school diploma/GED, vocational school, or equivalent trade training.
Demonstrated experience in a mechanically inclined role requiring strong attention to detail, focus and physical effort.
Basic mathematical aptitude and understanding basic mechanic concepts to read/interpret drawings.
Written and verbal communication

Ability to lift and carry 25-50lbs
Physical tasks may include, walking, prolonged standing/sitting/squatting, use of hands for basic pincher and manipulation tasks
Ability to push, pull, kneel, bend, twist, and climb (ladders/stools)
Exposure to grease and oils, dust/other irritants, and electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards
