Job Summary

Position Overview: We are seeking a skilled and experienced Data Storage Engineer to join our dynamic IT team. As a Senior Data Storage Engineer, you will play a crucial role as part of the WHOI HPC, Servers and Storage team in managing, optimizing and protecting our data storage infrastructure. Your expertise in NetApp administration, VAST administration, data replication and backup, cloud storage solutions, disaster recovery and integration with various platforms will be essential in ensuring the availability, reliability, and performance of our data storage systems.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities:

  • Implement, administer and maintain NetApp and VAST storage systems to ensure optimal performance, capacity planning, and data integrity.

  • Implement and manage data replication processes to ensure data availability, disaster recovery, and business continuity.

  • Manage and administer data backup hardware (preferably Quantum) and software (preferably Commvault).

  • Manage and support cloud storage solutions, including Open Storage Network, Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Amazon Web Services storage offerings.

  • Integrate NFS/SMB storage solutions with VMware virtualization environments, ensuring seamless data access and performance optimization.

  • Utilize tools such as rclone, rsync, and Globus for efficient data transfers and synchronization between storage systems and provide training to the WHOI community.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to gather storage requirements, provide technical guidance, and implement storage solutions to meet business needs.

  • Participate in the design and implementation of new storage architectures, considering scalability, performance, and security requirements.

  • Monitor storage infrastructure health, diagnose and resolve performance issues, and apply necessary optimizations.

  • Stay up-to-date with industry trends and emerging technologies in data storage, cloud solutions, disaster recovery, and data management practices.

  • Document hardware, system configurations, procedures, and best practices for storage administration and usage.

Required Skills:

  • In-depth expertise in NetApp storage administration, including configuration, monitoring, and troubleshooting.

  • Proficiency in VAST storage administration, covering setup, maintenance, and performance tuning, quotas, snapshots and data protection.

  • Proficency in tape backup and archiving solutions, including tape library hardware and Commvault software (or similar).

  • Experience with data replication techniques and technologies to ensure high availability and disaster recovery.

  • Strong familiarity with cloud storage solutions such as Google Drive, Microsoft OneDrive, and Amazon Web Services storage offerings.

  • Proven ability to integrate NFS storage solutions with VMware virtualization environments.

  • Proficiency in utilizing tools like rclone, rsync, and Globus for data transfers and synchronization.

  • Solid understanding of storage architecture design principles, scalability, and performance optimization.

  • Excellent problem-solving skills to diagnose and resolve storage-related issues effectively.

  • Familiarity with Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Azure storage services, including S3, EBS, Glacier, etc.

  • Familiarity with data center operations, such as UPS and cooling.

  • Strong communication skills to collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams and convey technical information to non-technical stakeholders.

  • Ability to stay updated with the latest trends and advancements in data storage and cloud technologies.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • 10+ years of experience in data storage engineering, administration, and implementation

  • Relevant industry certifications, such as NetApp Certified Data Administrator (NCDA), VMware certifications, AWS/Azure certifications, etc., are a plus.
