Job Summary

The Biology Department is searching for a Postdoctoral Investigator to join the Sensory Ecology and Bioacoustics Lab to study soundscape and larval ecology of coral reefs. This is a full-time, exempt position eligible for benefits. Sea duty is required.

The successful candidate will be primarily responsible for helping design bioacoustic and soundscape experiments. Thus, it is desired to have experience in acoustic experiments with marine animals, analysis of bioacoustic and behavior data, SCUBA diving research, field research, laboratory studies, hearing studies (physiology and behavior), and acoustic measurements, particularly with particle motion. Candidate should also be able to code in Matlab and troubleshoot data analyses code as needed to improve data quality through assessment and modifications of the collected data and its analyses and be able to handle field situations appropriately.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Responsible for the Quality Assurance and Quality Control for all of the project’s collected acoustic and bioacoustic tag data.
  • Bioacoustic analyses including particle motion.
  • Develop and implement quality assurance processes and protocols applicable in the lab and the field and plan experiments.
  • Create code to analyze sound and behavior data. Design, develop and document tools or scripts as needed to analyze/plot data from instruments and collections.
  • Contribute to and lead peer-reviewed papers and presentations on the resulting data and quality assessment.
  • Field and laboratory projects.
  • Coordinating with a larger team, helping lead and coordinate field efforts.

  • PhD with a focus on sensory ecology and bioacoustics
  • Particle motion data collection and analyses capabilities
  • Matlab or similar coding

  • Demonstrated interest and ability to work across disciplines
  • Research diving
  • Boat handling

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

This position can involve occasional prolonged standing and/or walking. Other activities are expected to include kneeling, bending, stooping, twisting, pulling and/or pushing, reaching above and below shoulders, climbing ladders/stools, and lifting and/or carrying 50+ lbs. with assistance. This position requires the use of hands for basic grasping and fine manipulation. At sea work. Visual abilities desired include depth perception, peripheral and near/far vision. Other occupational requirements include hearing, talking, working around others, with others, and independently. Candidate may also be periodically exposed to the following conditions: excessive cold, heat or humidity; dust or other irritants; grease and oils; hazardous substances or specimens; electrical/mechanical/power equipment hazards; odorous chemicals or substances; and/or prolonged work hours. Physical duties are subject to change.
