Job Summary

The Paleo-FISHES Lab in the Geology & Geophysics Department at WHOI is looking for a Research Assistant I to join our team. The research assistant will be brought on to perform imaging and morphological analyses of extant fish from research museum collections and other sources. Comfort working with preserved specimens, computer and data management skills, attention to detail, and ability to work in a team are essential. This position is initially a 12-month position, ideal for an individual post-BA/BS who is looking for a short-term laboratory research position. In addition to the core functions of the position, the successful applicant will have the opportunity to participate in computer programming, microCT scan processing, data analysis, experimental design, and dissemination of results, and other professional development activities, based on their interests and goals.

Job Description

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Imaging of collections-based fish specimens using high resolution digital microscopy
  • Morphometric description and analysis of fish morphology using microscopy and image analysis
  • Manage Museum collection loans and associated datasets

Non-essential Functions

  • Other duties as deemed necessary

Work environment*

  • This is an in-person position with the potential for occasional hybrid work

Physical Demands*

  • Able to work with ethanol-preserved specimens
  • Able to lift and open jars ranging from 100 ml to 2 liters in size

Additional Job Requirements

Travel required

  • There is the opportunity for travel to museum collections for additional specimen analysis

Education and Experience

  • Bachelors Degree in science or related field (biology, zoology, or environmental science , or Associates degree and commensurate laboratory experience (1-3+ years)
  • Comfort with Microsoft office and google drive word processing and spreadsheets
  • Experience working with fish collections or other museum collections preferred but not required
