Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is currently searching for a Research Associate to join the Geology and Geophysics Department. This is a regular, full-time, exempt position, and is eligible for full benefits. The initial appointment is for 12 months with the possibility of extension depending on performance and funding availability. The ideal candidate will lead development, calibration, and simulation of high-resolution coastal hydrodynamical models for coral reef/coastal environments.

Job Description

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Applicants are expected to

  • Develop nested high-resolution hydrodynamic models with existing community models, such as (but not limited to) SCHISM and Wave Watch III

  • Analyze field and satellite observational data to understand coastal hydrodynamical processes and to evaluate the performance of hydrodynamic model

  • Test different model configurations and parameters, and adjust model set up to improve model performance

  • Carry out long-term model simulations and synthesize model output

  • Collaborate with an interdisciplinary team of scientists and effectively communicate scientific findings with scientists in different fields

  • Provide technical reports and other documentation of methods and procedures

  • Be able to work on tasks requiring creativity and independent thinking along with a deep understanding of fundamental research and science principles

  • Be able to work independently and effectively manage his/her own schedule to meet deadlines

  • Experience with data assimilation, forecasting, cross scale modelling, and/or sediment transport modelling would be an advantage

  • Experience with “what-if scenario” testing would be an advantage

NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: Preparation of scientific articles for publication, development of research proposals, and

participation in fieldwork

Education and Experience

  • PhD degree in physical oceanography with several years of ocean hydrodynamic modeling experience, or demonstrated competency as a postdoctoral researcher or research associate in a related field

  • Proficiency in Matlab/Python and Linux is required

  • Experience with oceanography or coral reef field work is advantageous, but not required.

  • Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to the ability to work around others. This position is mostly sedentary by nature.
