Job Summary
Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution’s Communications Department is seeking a Social Media Specialist to join its Marketing team. We are seeking a commitment of 10 hours per week, but the position could expand up to 19 hours per week. The Social Media Specialist will report to the Social Media Manager, and support content creation, design, and distribution of engaging social posts across WHOI’s social media channels.This position is hybrid-preferred (1-2 days/wk onsite) in Woods Hole, MA and local candidates will be given preference; however, remote candidates meeting the minimum qualifications will also be considered.

Job Description
Essential Functions & Duties
Write and publish engaging social posts on a variety of marine science topics
Source and utilize post-worthy photos from our image database
Edit photos and design graphics for social posts
Contribute to ideas and strategy related to cross-channel engagement
Draft and edit posts in content management system
Adhere to branding and institutional guidelines
Adhoc project work as assigned
Required Experience & Education
High school diploma or GED + 1 year of demonstrated experience in writing, communications, or journalism work
Proficiency in MS Office Suite (or online), Adobe Photoshop/Creative Suite, and Canva
Expert user of one or more social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, X, YouTube)
Background or demonstrated interest in marine science and/or science communication
Demonstrated ability to turn scientific jargon into layman’s terms
Preferred Experience & Education
BS/BA degree in marketing, communications, journalism or related field
Experience with social media scheduling software (Later, Agorapulse, Hootsuite, Hubspot, etc...)
