Job Summary
The Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a dynamic Director of Room 71 – a new initiative to maximize the awareness and impact of WHOI science through communications, marketing, and academic, creative, and corporate partnerships. The Director will be an innovative strategic thinker, with a proven record of achieving ocean science awareness and impact through their creative ideas, communications, and collaborations. The Director will play a critical role in raising awareness of WHOI’s brand and mission, advancing ocean awareness, and supporting WHOI science so it can achieve greater global impact (advancing WHOI’s mission and vision as described in Vision 2030).
Reporting directly to the Chief Communications Officer with a dotted line to the Vice President for Advancement and Chief Marketing Officer, this position oversees all facets of the Room 71 initiative, developing and delivering programs that achieve the following goals:
- Maximizing the impact of ocean science (from its inception) using marketing and PR strategies and strategic collaborations.
- Growing longterm awareness, interest, and support for ocean science (and WHOI) far beyond the usual audiences.
- Creating new partnerships and funding opportunities to make communications (and impact) more scalable.
This role requires a responsive leader who combines strategic thinking, excellent communications, and people skills with the ability to work across silos and engage colleagues across communications and WHOI at large to meet Room 71 objectives.
This is a part-time position (75%) that is eligible for benefits. This position offers a hybrid flexible work arrangement.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities
Leadership, Strategy, and Management
- Collaborate closely with Advancement and Communication leadership and staff to set priorities and ensure strategic alignment with the Institution’s broader objectives.
- Collaborate closely with Advancement leadership to fundraise for the initiative as well as for broader communications efforts at WHOI.
- Develop innovative new strategies to raise sufficient funds to support Room 71 activities and increase support for broader WHOI communications.
- Provide visionary leadership in building ocean science awareness and impact, fostering a culture of creativity, innovation, and collaboration.
- Develop, implement, and grow core programs so they align with WHOI's mission and vision.
- Develop and implement new strategies for transforming how people view the importance of ocean science and its potential for humanity.
- Develop and implement innovative strategies for building the WHOI brand to grow support for WHOI science.
- Develop bespoke strategies for assisting scientists with their “broader impacts” projects, in collaboration with the Advancement and Communications staff.
- Provide training and resources for WHOI staff in Impact Science Communication.
- Develop new approaches to delivering impact through inclusive formal and informal education that grows interest in science education and that leads to careers in ocean science.
- Develop concepts for self-funding experiences, exhibits, and platforms that promote WHOI science to a wide audience.
- Help build WHOI’s reputation as a leader in ocean science and ocean science communication.
- Secure and build partnerships with leading brands that help advance WHOI’s mission and vision.
- Work closely with colleagues in Communications and Creative Services to develop and execute key programs and strategies, actively striving to build buy-in and collaboration across the team.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with WHOI scientists and broader staff.
- Cultivate a positive team and work environment.
- Stay current with trends in science communication to continually enhance WHOI's offerings.
- Use science process to test, share, and improve learning.
- Develop strategies to measure success.
Non-Essential Functions
- Perform other duties as deemed necessary.
Education & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree required.
- Minimum of 10 years of experience in science communications and leading innovative and creative ocean science related projects.
- Proven track record in fundraising and sponsorship.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to effectively engage with diverse audiences and stakeholders.
- Extensive public speaking experience.
- Proven track record in people and project management, budgeting, and resource allocation.
- Self-starter with the ability to take ownership of projects and work independently.
- Proven ability to successfully handle multiple projects and meet critical deadlines.
- Results-oriented and a passion for creativity.
- Familiarity with working with scientists and/or ocean conservation and ocean science nonprofit organizations.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including occasional weekends and evenings.
Physical Requirements
Physical duties for this position include but are not limited to, ability to lift less than 25 lbs independently and carry 0-10 lbs independently. Other physical tasks include occasional prolonged standing and walking; use of hands for basic/fine grasping and manipulation, and repetitive motion. Other occupational requirements include talking, working around others, with others, and independently. Physical duties are subject to change.
