The position involves (i) microCT scanning, 3D morphometric measurements and model building of microfossils, (ii) developing and carrying out Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments to determine fluid flow regimes across the skin samples and 3D printed surfaces, and (iii) analysis of the findings of these experiments in the context of modern and fossil shark biology, and (iv) dissemination of these findings. The research position offers the scope to explore modern and fossil shark biology and bio-inspired design, and expert knowledge of fluid dynamics and functional morphology, especially working with software to analyze CT scans, is essential. The research associate will play a key role in the design and execution of the research and interpretation of the results and should be able to work independently with little supervision in this area.
PhD plus at least 3 years postdoctoral experience in in biomechanics, functional morphology, fluid dynamics or related field
Applicant will spend several weeks in Cambridge, MA to carry out PIV flow tank experiments in collaborator’s specialized lab space and to collect CT scan data.
