Job Summary

The Department of Geology & Geophysics seeks a PhD level researcher to develop projects assessing fluid dynamics and 3D morphology of fossil shark skin samples. The position involves (i) microCT scanning, 3D morphometric measurements and model building of microfossils, (ii) developing and carrying out Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) experiments to determine fluid flow regimes across the skin samples and 3D printed surfaces, and (iii) analysis of the findings of these experiments in the context of modern and fossil shark biology, and (iv) dissemination of these findings. The research position offers the scope to explore modern and fossil shark biology and bio-inspired design, and expert knowledge of fluid dynamics and functional morphology, especially working with software to analyze CT scans, is essential. The research associate will play a key role in the design and execution of the research and interpretation of the results and should be able to work independently with little supervision in this area.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Develop 3D models of fossil and modern denticles for 3D printing using CT Scanning and Digital 3D Microscopic Imaging
  • Perform and analyze PIV Flow Tank experiments to establish fluid dynamic models for modern and fossil denticles
  • Data analysis and dissemination

Education & Experience

PhD plus at least 3 years postdoctoral experience in in biomechanics, functional morphology, fluid dynamics or related field

Special Requirements

Applicant will spend several weeks in Cambridge, MA to carry out PIV flow tank experiments in collaborator’s specialized lab space and to collect CT scan data.
