Job Summary

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution is seeking a Welder to join the Facilities Department. Reporting to the Mechanical Shop Supervisor, this position performs a wide variety of welding and metal fabrication related tasks for all Institution facilities, including research vessels. Performs complex welding, cutting, and brazing work in the contstruction or repair of mechanical equipment. This is a regular full-time, non-exempt position and is eligible for benefits.

Essential Functions and Responsibilities

  • Welding and fabrication of all metals.
  • Assembles and disassembles mechanical equipment.
  • Reading and understanding of mechanical drawings. Performing layout work for construction projects and recommends material and provides design assistance where required.
  • Works with sheet metal when required.
  • May perform machining of minor nature and marine structural fabrications and shipboard pipe fitting/welding.
  • Works with welding equipment and tools, mechanics’ hand and power tools, lathes, drill press, power saw, press brake, hydraulic shear, sheet metal tools, and heavy equipment (forklifts and overhead cranes).

Non-Essential Functions

  • Performs other duties as deemed appropriate by supervisor.

Education & Experience

High school or vocational school required. 5 years experience in welding shop practices preferred.

Must possess one or more welding certificates.

Computer proficiency with common software applications (MS Word and MS Excel).

Strong interpersonal and communication skills.

Physical Requirements

Frequent lifting and carrying up to 50lbs is required. Other physical requirements include: frequent stooping, reaching, bending, kneeling, crouching and standing. Ability to hear and follow safety warnings and requirements. The environment may have exposure to extreme environmental and weather conditions (excessive/prolonged heat, cold or humidity and weather conditions), which may include exposure to chemicals and other potential hazards.
