Position Summary:

The Woods Hole Group is seeking a coastal engineer to join our growing Coastal Engineering Team in our Bourne, Massachusetts office. Our team has a diverse portfolio of complex and innovative coastal and environmental projects, and this position will directly support the design and implementation of those projects. While the primary role for the Coastal Engineer will be to support engineering design efforts, our employees often become involved in other project aspects such as field data collection, planning, permitting, and construction. Typical projects include coastal resilience, coastal structures, nature-based solutions, flood risk mapping, sediment management/dredging, habitat restoration, tidal crossings/hydraulics, and climate change planning. The candidate must have the ability to work in a team setting and be open to learning on the job.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Design of coastal engineering structures, nature-based solutions, beach nourishment and dredging, tidal crossings/hydraulic structures, and habitat restoration.
  • Conduct coastal processes data analyses involving winds, waves, water levels, and sediment.
  • Coastal and flood hazard mapping studies (FEMA, MC-FRM, etc.)
  • Coastal modeling that involves hydrodynamics, waves, currents, and sediments.
  • Support survey, oceanographic, wetland, and other field data collection efforts as needed.
  • Project implementation including permit filings, construction documentation, management and oversight
  • Technical writing and development of presentation materials including figures, tables, and deliverables.
  • Work successfully with other motivated team members to achieve project goals

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None required.

Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required:

  • Bachelor of Science degree in Civil, Coastal, Ocean, Waterfront, Structural, and/or Environmental Engineering or closely related field is required.
  • Firm understanding of coastal processes
  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Proficiency with business software including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Experience with coastal models (e.g., SRH, XBEACH, SWAN, CMS, etc.)
  • Experience with AutoCAD, ArcGIS, or equivalent platforms a plus.
  • Experience with programming languages including Matlab, Python, etc. preferred
  • Excellent English oral communication, technical writing, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are required.
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain one within 2 years.
  • Must be willing to report to the office in Bourne, MA and have a valid driver’s license.
  • Ability to legally work in the US (US Citizen or Work Visa).

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to access and navigate projects sites with varying terrain.
