Position Summary:

The Woods Hole Group is seeking a Civil Engineer with Surveying experience to join our Coastal Engineering Team. Project work supports design and implementation of coastal resilience, shore protection/structures, erosion control, flood risk reduction, sediment management, wetland restoration, and climate change planning projects. The Civil/Coastal Engineer will focus on development of plans in AutoCAD Civil 3D, including collection and incorporation of survey data. The position will be based out of our Bourne, MA office to support a diverse portfolio of projects. The ideal candidate would have the ability to work on all phases of a project including data acquisition and processing, design and evaluation of engineering alternatives, development of construction plans and specifications, support of permit applications, and assistance with construction documents and oversight. The candidate must have the ability to work independently in a team setting, be open to learning on the job, and support project management.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Development of engineering plans and specifications, including land survey data
  • Survey with a robotic total station and GNSS RTK equipment. Knowledge of robotics and/or drones a plus
  • Support for coastal, oceanographic, and environmental field data collection and analysis
  • Assessment of coastal hazards and mapping of coastal floodplains
  • Engineering design and evaluation of shore protection structures, beach nourishment, dredging, hydraulic structures, habitat restoration and climate change adaptations
  • Report writing and developing presentation materials including figures, tables, and deliverables.
  • Assist in preparation of environmental permits, construction plans and specifications and participate in construction management and oversight
  • Support proposals and cost estimates for potential projects
  • Work successfully with other motivated team members to achieve project goals
  • Participate in client meetings and gather feedback
  • Personal task management, adherence to project deadlines & scope

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • None required.

Knowledge, Skills, and/or Abilities Required:

  • Minimum of 3 years of related experience.
  • Bachelor’s degree in Civil/Coastal/Structural Engineering or closely related field is required.
  • Experience with AutoCAD Civil3D, ArcGIS, or equivalent platforms.
  • Proficiency in programming including Matlab, Python, etc. is preferred as well as business software including MS Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Excellent English oral communication, technical writing, interpersonal, and teamwork skills are required.
  • Engineer In Training (EIT) certification or ability to obtain one within 2 years.
  • Must be willing to report to the office in Bourne, MA and have a valid drivers license.
  • Ability to legally work in the US (US Citizen or Work Visa).

Capabilities in modeling, coastal processes data analysis, and courses in quantitative coastal processes are desirable.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 25 pounds at a time.
  • Must be able to access and navigate projects sites with varying terrain.
