About Wild Oyster Project
Wild Oyster Project is building a community-driven movement to restore native oyster habitat and improve the ecological health of San Francisco Bay. Through restoration planning, environmental education, scientific collaboration, and hands-on stewardship, we connect people to the Bay while advancing solutions that strengthen coastal ecosystems for generations to come.
At the heart of this work is Save Your Shucks (SYS), our flagship shell recycling program. Save Your Shucks transforms discarded oyster shells into a valuable restoration resource, diverting material from landfills and returning it to the Bay's restoration pipeline. Through partnerships with restaurants, volunteers, community organizations, and restoration practitioners, the program creates a direct pathway for people to participate in rebuilding habitat, improving water quality, and supporting the long-term recovery of native oyster populations.
Position Summary
The Save Your Shucks Program Manager is responsible for leading, operating, and growing Wild Oyster Project's signature shell recycling initiative. This role combines community engagement, volunteer leadership, partnership development, logistics coordination, and strategic planning to ensure the long-term success and expansion of the program.
As the primary steward of Save Your Shucks, the Program Manager will cultivate relationships across a diverse network of volunteers, restaurant partners, landowners, community organizations, restoration practitioners, and scientific collaborators. The successful candidate will ensure shells are collected, tracked, cured, stored, and ultimately transferred to projects that advance restoration, research, and environmental stewardship throughout the region.
This position is ideal for someone who enjoys building systems, bringing people together around a shared mission, and turning ambitious ideas into measurable environmental impact. The Program Lead will play a key role in shaping the future of one of the Bay Area's most visible and community-centered shell recycling initiatives.
Core Responsibilities
Volunteer Leadership & Community Building
● Recruit, onboard, train, and support volunteers participating in shell collection, transportation, storage, and community events.
● Develop and maintain a resilient network of volunteer shell runners, workday leaders, operations support volunteers and community ambassadors.
● Coordinate volunteer schedules and activities across shell pickups, drop-off events, workdays, and special projects.
● Empower experienced volunteers to take ownership of recurring program activities and leadership opportunities.
● Communicate regularly with volunteers regarding opportunities, schedules, program updates, and organizational initiatives.
● Foster a welcoming, mission-driven community that inspires long-term volunteer engagement and stewardship.
Restaurant & Partner Engagement
● Build, maintain, and strengthen relationships with restaurant partners donating oyster shells.
● Serve as the primary point of contact for participating restaurants and community partners.
● Coordinate shell collection schedules, supplies, and partner communications.
● Develop productive working relationships with curing-site hosts, storage-site operators, landowners, regulators, contractors, restoration organizations, and other stakeholders.
● Represent Wild Oyster Project professionally and enthusiastically within the community and among partner organizations.
● Ensure partner sites understand and follow established procedures, safety standards, and operational best practices.
Shell Recycling Operations & Logistics
● Oversee all aspects of shell collection, curing, storage, transportation, and inventory management.
● Coordinate shell movement through volunteer and partner networks to ensure efficient and reliable operations.
● Maintain inventories of bins, buckets, signage, gloves, and other program supplies.
● Ensure shells are properly handled, documented, cured, and stored according to program standards.
● Maintain accurate records of shell provenance, curing status, inventory levels, and donation readiness.
● Coordinate the transfer, donation, or sale of shell materials to restoration, scientific, and educational initiatives.
● Ensure operational safety, cleanliness, and compliance with program protocols.
● Develop storage and logistics strategies that support future program growth and restoration opportunities.
Community Events & Public Outreach
● Plan, organize, and staff recurring shell recycling events, including:
○ Monthly, weekend shell drop-off event in the East Bay
○ Monthly, weekend shell drop-off event in San Francisco
● Coordinate event logistics, volunteer staffing, supplies, transportation, and setup.
● Support broader Wild Oyster Project programming, including volunteer workdays, oyster socials, educational events, restaurant partner activations, happy hours, and community outreach initiatives.
● Collaborate with communications staff and volunteers to promote upcoming events and broadcast successes through newsletters, social media, and other outreach channels.
● Help create engaging experiences that connect people to restoration, stewardship, and the ecology of San Francisco Bay.
Data Management & Program Reporting
● Track shell volumes, pickups, drop-offs, donations, volunteer participation, partner engagement, and program outcomes.
● Maintain organized databases and operational records.
● Assist with reporting metrics to organizational leadership, funders, community partners, and stakeholders.
● Monitor program performance and recommend improvements that increase efficiency, impact, and community engagement.
Program Growth & Strategic Development
● Identify opportunities to expand shell collection capacity, increase program visibility, and deepen community participation.
● Develop recommendations that strengthen program operations, partnerships, and long-term sustainability.
● Support strategic planning efforts and future program development initiatives.
● Help ensure program activities align with organizational priorities, restoration goals, and available resources.
● Stay informed about innovations and best practices in shell recycling, habitat restoration, and community-based environmental stewardship.
● Contribute ideas that help position Save Your Shucks as a leading shell recycling and restoration support program on the West Coast.
Website & Program Communications
● Ensure that information on the Save Your Shucks section of the Wild Oyster Project website is up-to-date, relevant, and accurate.
● Ensure information regarding drop-off locations, volunteer opportunities, events, and partner organizations remains current and accessible.
● Coordinate website updates as program information evolves.
● Support the creation and maintenance of public-facing program resources and communications materials.
Additional Responsibilities
● Perform other duties as needed to support the successful operation and continued growth of Save Your Shucks.
● Adhere to all organizational policies and procedures, including those established by Earth Island Institute.
Qualifications
Required
● Experience managing volunteer programs, community-based initiatives, environmental programs, or related efforts.
● Experience coordinating logistics across distributed volunteer, partner, or stakeholder networks.
● Experience building and maintaining relationships with diverse organizations, community groups, and partners.
● Strong organizational, project management, and problem-solving skills.
● Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
● Ability to manage multiple priorities simultaneously while maintaining attention to detail.
● Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to build trust with a wide range of stakeholders.
● Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with volunteers, partners, contractors, and community members.
Preferred
● Experience in recycling, waste diversion, environmental stewardship, habitat restoration, conservation, or related fields.
● Experience in operations, construction, materials management, or logistics.
● Background in marine science, environmental science, restoration ecology, or a related discipline.
● Familiarity with oyster restoration, shell recycling, or coastal resilience initiatives.
● Experience using data management systems, volunteer management platforms, and website content management systems.
Additional Requirements
● Valid driver's license and reliable personal vehicle required.
● Ability and willingness to travel regularly throughout the San Francisco Bay Area to restaurants, shell collection sites, storage locations, partner facilities, and event venues.
● Ability to transport supplies and equipment as needed.
● Ability to work outdoors in varying weather conditions.
● Ability to safely lift and carry up to 50 pounds.
● Availability to work occasional evenings and weekends in support of volunteer events, partner activities, and community programming.
