VLIZ plays a pivotal role in European marine data and observation initiatives and projects such as EMODnet, LifeWatch, and Blue-Cloud. We host marine databases of international importance, including EurOBIS, WoRMS, and Marine Regions. VLIZ also pioneers in marine observations and amongst others operates a range of innovative robotic platforms that are available to the marine research and innovation community. With this growing fleet of Marine Autonomous Systems, there is also a need to orchestrate the resulting data streams. To achieve this objective, we are looking for a passionate data engineer to help us construct solid data pipelines and to strengthen the team of the VLIZ Marine Data Centre. This job offer relates to the growing number of research and innovation (R&I) projects within VLIZ in the field of innovative marine observations and data management that have a civil as well as a military purpose (dual use).   • An open-ended contract with a competitive remuneration package based on the candidate's qualifications and experience according to the salary scales set forth by the Flemish Government on 01-01-2009;

Your tasks

  • You proactively follow up on the latest developments in the field of (marine) data management;
  • You design, test and implement maintainable solutions to support data projects;
  • You document new and existing components and data flows;
  • You troubleshoot and resolve issues with the operational data systems;
  • You continuously improve the efficiency and scalability of the data infrastructure.


For each function, VLIZ considers enthusiastic involvement, service minded, excellent professionalism and integrity as important characteristics.

Your profile

  • You hold a Master degree in Applied Sciences (e.g. software engineering, bioinformatics), Data Science, or a related field; (or equivalent experience);
  • At least 3 years of relevant experience;
  • Practical knowledge of different forms of data storage: from different file formats over classic RDBMS to NoSQL systems;
  • Strong programming skills, including experience with Python;
  • Experience with Linux and common command-line programs;
  • Experience with docker and microservice design is a plus;
  • Experience with Rust is a plus;
  • Affinity with relevant (marine) software, systems, data formats and technologies;
  • You have a sharp and analytical mind and possess a healthy dose of strategic insight;
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a team and communicate effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders;
  • You are eager to work in an international context;
  • Proficient knowledge of English.
