Assistant Professor in Marine Affairs with Expertise in Marine and Coastal Law
The Department of Marine Affairs at the University of Rhode Island seeks an Assistant Professor of Marine Affairs with expertise in Marine and Coastal Law. This position is 50% Research, 40% Teaching, and 10% Service. Full consideration will be given to applications received by February 1, 2022. The Department of Marine Affairs advances research on and provides leadership for the management of complex coastal and marine environments through distinction in teaching, research, and outreach. Through degree programs at the Bachelor’s, Master’s, and Doctoral levels, students develop the analytical, collaborative, communication, and leadership skills necessary to make theoretical and applied contributions to socially just, ecologically sound, and sustainable human‐environment interactions associated with coastal and marine systems. With a diverse set of skills and areas of expertise, department faculty engage in research and practice on a wide range of issues. The department strongly values inclusive engagement with government, business, professional groups, local communities, historically underrepresented groups, resource users and non‐governmental organizations.
In the Marine Affairs programs, policy problems are examined at the local, state, regional, national, and international levels. Subjects studied have included management of living and non-living resources in the exclusive economic zone, environmental protection in the coastal zone, the interplay of marine science and public policy in areas such as ocean pollution and fisheries management, developments in international ocean law, and the role of governments and international organizations in Marine Affairs. To date, students have been attracted to the program from all over the United States and from over 35 other countries.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Establish a competitively funded research program relevant to coastal management and U.S. Coastal and/or Ocean Law.
Teach undergraduate and graduate level courses relevant to the Marine Affairs program, including an undergraduate course on the basic principles of the law governing the management of developed and undeveloped shorelines and coastal waters of the US (MAF 220:lntroduction to Marine and Coastal Law) and a graduate course examining the existing and proposed state and national legislation affecting US coastal regions (MAF 521: Coastal Zone Law).
Coordinate our dual graduate degree program with the Roger Williams University (RWU) School of Law, collaborate with the RWU Marine Affairs Institute and RI Sea Grant, and assist with advising in the URI Pre-Law program.
Publish original research in peer-reviewed academic journals.
Provide advising, training, and research mentorship to undergraduate and graduate students.
Provide service to the department, college, university and the profession.
Perform other duties as required.
Ph.D. or J.D. at time of appointment (August 2022) in Law, Planning, Political Science, Public Policy, Marine Affairs, Geography, Environmental Policy or other related field.
Demonstrated ability to conduct and apply research about planning and/or legal issues in coastal areas.
Evident potential to develop and instruct undergraduate and graduate courses relevant to coastal and/or ocean law.
Evident potential to develop competitively-funded research program.
A record of empirical research supported by methods such as: experimental, qualitative, observational, social network, statistical, computational social science, spatial analysis, community-based, or other methodologies.
Evidence of research as shown by publications and/or presentations at national and international meetings and conferences.
Demonstrated success in serving the needs of diverse student populations and/or reaching out to diverse communities and publics.
Demonstrated proficiency in written communication skills.
Demonstrated proficiency in oral communication skills.
