Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCPs) are used on research ships to measure ocean currents. During a cruise, the current observations may be used to locate features, or to aid in deploying over-the-side equipment; afterwards, they play a role in a wide range of applications, from climatological descriptions of ocean circulation to detailed process studies of current features (e.g., fronts, eddies) and phenomena (e.g., internal waves).
The Currents Group at the University of Hawaii serves the US oceanographic research community by providing software and advice for ocean current measurements, primarily using shipboard acoustic Doppler current profilers. We are looking for someone who enjoys working in Python on Open Source software, visualizing ocean current structures, contributing to the nation’s oceanographic research enterprise, and interacting with technicians and scientists throughout the country. This position is located at the University of Hawaii, in Honolulu.
The new tream member will become familiar with our operations, including supporting the UHDAS shipboard ADCP installations at sea, installing software to build up the linux computers used, post-processing UHDAS data, answering questions from the larger shipboard ADCP community, and to varying degrees, the software we use to do all this. UHDAS+CODAS documentation is available here.
We have an operational position open now, closing Monday Dec 9. The job description is in this PDF. Applications are made through RCUH, job posting number 224804. (instructions are at the bottom of the job description).
