Because of the temporary nature of these appointments, Casual Hire employees are not eligible for most benefits as provided to regular Board of Regents (BOR) and Civil Service employees (i.e. paid holidays/leave). Casual Hire appointments may last for up to 89 days for full-time employees, and up to 1 calendar year for part-time employees.

Duties:

  1. Works with Pacific Aquaculture & Coastal Resources Center (PACRC) staff to develop and implement aquaculture and environmental research and education programs to a wide variety of audiences, mainly in Hawaii but also potentially in the Pacific.
  2. Collaborates with UH Hilo faculty, administration, Hawaii Community College and other UH Hilo personnel to provide services and information to ensure the smooth operation of the PACRC.
  3. Manages and supervises all areas of the PACRC, including and not limited to the building, wet laboratory, tanks, and storage areas other than those designated to specific personnel; maintains a clean and safe environment in all areas.
  4. Conducts and/or coordinates tours of facilities, assists visitors to the PACRC; schedules use of PACRC facilities, following UH Hilo policy.
  5. Monitors security on PACRC facilities
  6. Manages and supervises non-RCUH PACRC support personnel and student employees: train, schedules, guides, and evaluates personnel; hires, retains, terminates student employees per applicable SECE and RCUH procedures; processes student time cards.
  7. Trains new personnel, students, student assistants, and volunteers on the safe operation and maintenance of tools, machinery equipment, and facilities common to aquaculture operations. Examples: tractors, forklifts, pumps, aerators, pumping tools, basic electrical wiring, saws, mowers, etc.
  8. Manages PACRC facilities budget in coordination with administrative directives: controls expenditure of funds and maintains accurate and current financial records.
  9. Purchases supplies and maintains an appropriate level of inventory
  10. Conducts inventory and maintains records for vehicles, equipment, tools, and rolling stock; assures that all are well maintained, repaired, and safe for use.
  11. Facilitates the material needs of all labs on the PACRC and participates in labs at PACRC as requested
  12. Maintains records of PACRC operations, completes necessary reports, and provides updates as needed or requested to the administration and the faculty.
  13. Troubleshoots problems, implements standard operating procedures, and contacts appropriate people for assistance when system failures occur. Must be able to follow instructions over the phone and in equipment manuals to conduct basic repairs.
  14. Constructs facilities or coordinates construction projects; updates PACRC maps to include changes, including the addition of underground utilities.
  15. Assists PACRC staff and UH researchers in the design, building and maintaining of aquatic organism systems
  16. Responsible for the daily husbandry with the exception of specialized research, for all PACRC aquatic organisms, including monitoring water quality, organism health, feeds and feeding and facilities. Works with the following: freshwater fish, aquaponics, marine fish, invertebrates, seaweed, live feeds and microalgae culture.
  17. Assists with laboratory analysis and laboratory courses.
  18. Assists PACRC users with management of UH Hilo aquatic organisms including all management and treatment needs.
    • Improves the PACRC safety plan.
    • Ensures that staff and volunteers are aware of safety policies and plans.
    • Enforces health and safety regulations.
    • Ensures that the PACRC complies with government regulations.
    • Responsible for continuous animal care systems such as air and water support that require IACUC approval.
    • Must be able to pass required training for IACUC compliance.
    • Maintain research compliance records and assist with inspections

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. Possession of a baccalaureate degree in Aquaculture, Fisheries or related fields. Two year(s) of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for aquaculture or agricultural production including system development and maintenance; or equivalent education/training or experience.
  2. Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  3. Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  4. Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team members and individuals.
  5. For supervisory work, demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  6. Ability to lift 50 pounds
  7. Possess a current driver's license and ability to drive vehicles with manual shift.
  8. Able to operate (or willing to learn to operate) basic aquaculture lab and field equipment.
  9. Able to perform (or willing to learn) standard servicing and repairs of tools, machinery, and equipment common to aquaculture operations.
  10. Familiar with the use of spreadsheets in data entry and planning; able to prepare reports and presentations using MS Word, Excel, and Powerpoint; proficient with email.
  11. Able to use hand and power tools for simple construction and repair (particularly plumbing tools).
  12. Basic mechanical and construction skills and some knowledge of electrical systems in order to design, build and maintain aquaculture system.
  13. Demonstrated ability to function in a multi-cultural setting

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. M.S. degree in aquaculture, fisheries, marine science, conservation biology environmental studies, or a related field
  2. Experience supervising and working with professional level employees
  3. Basic machining and welding skills
  4. Practical experience in non-formal aquaculture education
  5. Familiarity with RCUH and UH administrative and fiscal policies and procedures
  6. Scientific dive certified or willing and able to undergo training and certification
  7. Demonstrated ability to culture larval and adult shellfish, seaweed, and finfish (freshwater and marine)
  8. Demonstrated ability to culture microalgae and live feeds such as rotifers and copepods
