Doctoral Fellowship – 1 Vacancy

The Centro de Ciências do Mar do Algarve (CCMAR) opens one (01) vacancy for a doctoral fellowship (BD) in the scientific area of Aquaculture, Biochemistry and Molecular Biology or related area, eligible to candidates of any nationality, including stateless persons and beneficiaries of the political refugee status, within the scope of the research project - 2022.06526.PTDC - named as Zfscreen – “Screening for molecules capable of rescuing CDKL5 deficiency phenotypes using Zebrafish models”, funded by Fundação para a Ciência e Tecnologia I.P./MCTES, through national funding, under the following conditions:

Work Plan, Tasks and Objectives:

Specifically, the fellow will be involved in the following tasks and objectives:

• Contribution to the maintenance of zebrafish facilities within the scope of the project;

• Histological and morphological analysis of mutant zebrafish structures and those treated with molecules of interest;

• Molecular biology techniques applied to the identification of gene expression sites associated with zebrafish development in WT, mutant, and transgenic specimens;

• Screening of compound libraries in CDKL5 mutant fish and phenotypic, behavioral, histological, and molecular characterization of treated fish;

• Analysis of phenotypes in transgenic fish using fluorescence microscopy;

• Development of an image and data bank related to the results obtained from the different tasks.

Scientific Supervisor: Professor Leonor Cancela, Project coordinator, Professor at University of Algarve and Group Leader at CCMAR and Doctor Paulo Gavaia, Auxiliary Professor at University of Algarve and Group Leader at CCMAR.

Workplace: The place of work is at CCMAR - University of Algarve Gambelas Campus and other places necessary for the competition of work plan.

Requirements for the application:

The Candidates must meet the following conditions:

1. Bachelor's Degree in Marine Biology or related fields;

2. Master's Degree in Aquaculture and Fisheries or a related field with a minimum final grade of 15 out of 20;

3. Proven laboratory work with zebrafish for a minimum period of 24 months;

4. Proven experience (at least 24 months) in performing histological techniques for bone and cartilage detection, immunolocalization techniques for protein detection in zebrafish, fluorescence microscopy analysis, and molecular biology techniques.

Non-compliance justifies exclusion from the procedure.

Evaluation Criteria:

Through the analysis of the application documents the evaluation criteria for the applications and their relative weight for ranking are as follows:

  1. Experience of at least 2 years working with zebrafish behavior analysis (40%)

  2. Experience in histological techniques for bone and cartilage, immunolocalization techniques in zebrafish, fluorescence microscopy, and molecular biology techniques (30%)

  3. Curricular merit (30%)

The selection committee reserves the right to contact and interview candidates if additional information or clarification of any curricular aspect is necessary. In case it takes place, the interview aims to evaluate in more detail the curricular items used to grade the candidate according to the list above.

In the event that no applicant has the necessary profile, the selection committee reserves the right to close the call without any recruitment. In the event that the selected person does not take up the position because of failure to comply with documentary requirements or any other reason, or later during the contract if they resign, the jury reserves the right, upon convenience and opportunity, to assign the post to the next applicant in accordance with the ranking positions based on the selectable reservation list that can be used up to 06 months of the date of the present announcement.

Fellowship conditions: The fellowship will have an initial duration of 3 months, possibly renewed for additional periods or until the end of the research project for a total maximum of 48 months and with an expected start date of October, 2024. The fellowship must be carried out under an exclusivity regimen, according to the CCMAR fellowship regulations (see here), and the FCT fellowship regulation based on the Portuguese law 40/2004, of 18 of August (Scientific Research Fellowship holder statutes) amended by the Decree-Law 123/2019 of 28 of August. A maintenance allowance of 1259.64€ will be paid monthly, through bank transfer, and will be updated as stipulated by the Foundation for Science and Technology (see here).

Application period: from 4th of September to 17th of September of 2024 at 23:59 (Lisbon time, Portugal).

Results and Prior Hearing: Notification of admission and ranking results will be communicated by email to candidates within 90 working days after the deadline for submitting applications. After said notification, the candidates have 10 working days to comment/challenge the preliminary decision.

Fellowship Agreement model:

After the candidate selection and all information is received, it will be signed a fellowship agreement in accordance with the model here.

Fellowship Holder Assessment:

The ativity developed by the fellowship holder will be evaluated by the supervisor, by apllying the following criteria, in accordance with the model bellow:

Criteria 1 – Compliance with work plan (50%)

Criteria 2 – Motivation and dedication to the project (50%)

The board of Directors reserves the right, due to a change in circumstances at the date of the present announcement, to cancel the present call without any recruitment.
