A fast-growing conservation organization seeks to hire a passionate and proactive individual to serve as a Communications Manager focused on lands and wildlife, with a strong emphasis on western states, public lands, wildlife health – including chronic wasting disease - and state-level storytelling. The Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is looking for a skilled leader to advance the TRCP’s voice and mission on hunting, fishing and conservation issues, primarily to conserve and restore fish and wildlife habitat on America’s public and private lands, and to enhance and expand public access for hunting and fishing.

Using traditional media as well as social media, advocacy tools, and other communications tactics, this individual will work with TRCP’s conservation team, national communications team, and outside partners to develop and implement effective communications strategies that advance our goals and mission. This includes educating the public and decision-makers on conservation policy, driving online audiences to act, building and retaining advocates, and fostering relationships with journalists and other media influencers. The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker with experience in written and broadcast media who shows initiative and a willingness to collaborate with internal and external partners. The ideal candidate also brings a data-informed mindset - comfortable working within shared reporting systems, contributing to campaign measurement, and using performance insights to sharpen strategy over time. TRCP's communications team values structured planning and cross-functional collaboration, and this role is a meaningful contributor to that work. This person must understand the voice and values of the hunt-fish community and be eager to further the organization’s work to conserve special places, safeguard big game migration corridors, balance development with habitat values, open access to inaccessible public lands, and address wildlife health challenges like chronic wasting disease.

Founded in 2002, the Theodore Roosevelt Conservation Partnership (TRCP) is a national 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that works with 64 partner groups, its Corporate Council and its 140,000 members and supporters to guarantee all Americans quality places to hunt and fish. We unite and amplify our partners’ voices by strengthening policy and funding around conservation, habitat, and access.

The TRCP offers a generous benefits package including health, dental, vision, and life insurance, 401k, cell phone and home internet reimbursement, and ample paid time off.

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Work with TRCP program managers, field staff, and external partners to lead the development of a strategic communications plan that advances the TRCP’s conservation goals through effective communication.

  • Project manage communications campaigns that are innovative and effective to push the TRCP’s policy priorities forward.

  • Collaborate with field and communications teams to create, edit, and promote communications products focused on the TRCP’s western work—including statements and outreach to the press, blogs, webpages, fact sheets, leave-behinds, op-eds, and social media posts.

  • Use communications tactics to leverage internal expertise on the western conservation team and increase the TRCP’s standing as a thought leader and policy expert in the western conservation space.

  • Coordinate with TRCP’s conservation and digital teams to mobilize sportsmen and sportswomen to take action via targeted emails, online forms, and social media.

  • Coordinate with partners, including by serving on partner communication coalitions.

  • Foster existing, and develop new, relationships with national and local journalists and media influencers, be a spokesperson for conservation campaigns, and work toward earned media coverage in a variety of outlets.

  • Organize media events and interviews, promoting the TRCP’s professional team of experts.

  • Use analytics to measure effectiveness of communications strategies and tactics, compiling such metrics in reports as needed.

  • Be a thought partner with the entire TRCP Communications team.

ESSENTIAL EXPERIENCE, SKILLS, AND COMPETENCIES

  • At least five years of experience in communications, preferably with a portion of that time in policy or advocacy work.

  • Strategic mindset, with a demonstrated record of designing and implementing effective communications strategies.

  • Ability to summarize and simplify complex policy issues and explain them through engaging content.

  • Exceptional writing, editing, and storytelling skills; ability to reach audiences with an engaging take on science or political subject matters; and ability to message inclusively in a way that resonates across political and geographic boundaries.

  • Ability to collaborate effectively with a team of field and communications staff to strategize, develop, refine, and place media content.

  • Experience with content sequencing and campaign planning frameworks, not just individual content production.

  • Existing relationships with hunt-fish and mainstream media outlets and experience pitching stories and interviews.

  • Experience using email databases, content management systems, and website publishing platforms a plus.

  • Comfort with AI tools as part of a modern communications workflow.

  • Fluency with digital analytics, including reach, engagement, and audience growth.

  • Strong attention to detail.

  • Self-starter who can work with a team that is spread out across the region and country.

  • Adept at taking initiative, planning, following through, and collaborating with partners.

  • Ability to focus in a fast-paced environment and pivot to the changing needs of the day.

  • A strong understanding of the voice and values of the hunt-fish community and public lands.

  • Experience working for a nonprofit is a plus.
