REPORTS TO: Laboratory Manager

STATUS: Full time, non-exempt

LOCATION: Bellingham, WA (on-site)

SALARY RANGE: $80,000 – $90,000/year based on interview outcome and experience

JOB SUMMARY:

The Formulations Chemist is an objective-focused individual, proactive in problem-solving and has the leadership and communication skills to maintain our culture and to help shape the future of the company. As part of the Tidal Vision team, the individual will work with new product and application developments to support a wide variety of initiatives for the Tidal-Tec Biomaterial Science division. This individual will work through the development cycle from the creation of new sustainable polymeric material solutions to the development and improvement of existing products and solutions. The Formulation Chemist will work with laboratory colleagues and production team members to drive the development of new products from the prototype to production stages, and work to improve existing products based on market feedback. The ideal candidate will seek context from the markets and in collaboration with the Tidal-Tec™ Business Development team.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Modifies current technology to make prototype products for potential customers.
  • Validates stability and consistency of prototype samples through sound research.
  • Conduct research into the structures and properties of materials in order to obtain information that could be used to develop new products or enhance existing ones.
  • Research and develop formulations for coatings, films, fibers, and other materials.
  • Determine ways to strengthen or combine materials, or develop new materials with specific properties for use in a variety of products and applications.
  • Collaborate with commercial teams, driving product development with complete contextual knowledge and taking advantage of cross pollination and the learnings that occur between different divisions.
  • Devise testing methods to evaluate the effects of various conditions on particular materials.
  • Plan laboratory experiments to confirm feasibility of processes and techniques used in the production of materials with special characteristics.
  • Study the functions, chemical processes, and composition used in our materials’ refining process to advance products and materials research.

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Proven experience in formulation development with chitosan or related polymers.
  • Experience in scaling up polymer synthesis from lab-scale to industrial production.
  • Proven expertise in polymer synthesis and characterization, with a focus on chitosan biopolymers.
  • 3+ years experience in a commercial lab setting is essential, as well as having an exceptional customer focus.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with people at all levels and from all kinds of backgrounds, scientific or nonscientific, internally and externally.
  • Able to translate customer needs into scientific research and experiments, and scientific results into customer solutions.
  • Ability to understand how the cost of labor, instrumentation, etc, compared with the possible outcomes, is going to affect the viability of a research project.
  • Master’s degree in Chemistry, Material Science, or a related field.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience in a variety of industries, such as oil & gas derivatives or PFAS, is highly desirable.
  • PhD in Chemistry, Material Science or related field preferred.

  • Incumbent is subject to a criminal background check

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

Most of the work is performed in a laboratory setting and will require occasional time at a desk. Physical requirements of the position include walking, standing, or sitting for extended periods, lifting heavy objects (50 lbs or more), climbing, crouching, operating tools, and wearing appropriate PPE at all times.
