Organization Overview
The International Fisheries Conservation program is a sponsored project of The Ocean Foundation (a unique 501(c)3 international community foundation). This program seeks to provide scientific and policy advice to catalyze development of a system of rules and consequences for sustainable management of marine fisheries globally.
Position Overview
The International Fisheries Conservation program is looking for a Senior Program Associate.
The position will support the work of The Ocean Foundation’s (TOF) International Fisheries Conservation program to advance precautionary harvest strategies at regional fisheries management organizations (RFMOs). Expected job responsibilities include communicating fisheries science and policy to diverse audiences, supporting the preparation of the program’s science-based policy positions, and representing the program at international fisheries meetings. The senior program associate’s work location is flexible and could be based anywhere in the United States through a telework agreement. The Senior Program Associate position is instrumental in maintaining those core value standards in their role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead communications efforts for the International Fisheries Conservation program’s harvest strategy initiatives, including serving as program webmaster, managing social media channels, organizing webinars, and drafting blogs, factsheets, and multimedia.
- Provide support to ensure the effective development and implementation of the team’s strategies and tactics related to harvest strategies at regional fisheries management organizations (RFMO) in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans. Lead efforts in appointed region(s).
- Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of relevant issues at each RFMO and any evolution in the related science, technology, and policy.
- Research, draft and/or proof policy briefs and scientific issue briefs to advance program objectives. Review external policy proposals and white papers, as needed.
- Develop and maintain relationships with decision makers, scientists, fishing and seafood industry members, conservation groups and other constituencies to partner on common objectives.
- Represent the program at scientific and policy meetings, multilateral fora, and other events, as determined by the position’s supervisor, and report back to the team on meeting proceedings.
- Provide logistical and content support for contractors and others working in support of the program.
Qualification Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in science field required, advanced degree preferred.
- At least four years of applicable job experience, including familiarity with fisheries, is required.
- Strong interpersonal skills, as well as oral and written communication skills, including communicating complex scientific concepts to the public.
- Proficiency in WordPress and website management, as well as social media experience, including using AI, is desired.
- Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills, highly results-oriented, and an ability to work both as part of a team and independently.
- English fluency required. Additional competency in one or more of the following languages is highly desirable: Spanish, French and Japanese.
- Must have current legal authorization to work in the United States.
Travel Requirements
Frequent domestic and international travel anticipated.
