International Fisheries Conservation – Officer
Organization Overview
The International Fisheries Conservation program is a sponsored project of The Ocean
Foundation (a unique 501(c)3 international community foundation). This program seeks to
provide scientific and policy advice to catalyze development of harvest strategies for
sustainable management of marine fisheries globally.
Position Overview
The International Fisheries Conservation program is looking for an Officer. The position will
support the work of The Ocean Foundation’s (TOF) International Fisheries Conservation
program to advance precautionary harvest strategies at regional fisheries management
organizations (RFMOs). Expected job responsibilities include engaging in and communicating
fisheries science, supporting the preparation of the program’s science-based policy positions,
and representing the program at international fisheries meetings. The Officer’s work location
is flexible and can be based anywhere in the United States through a telework agreement. As a

and execution of all programs. The Officer position is instrumental in maintaining those core
value standards in their role.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Provide support to ensure the effective development and implementation of
the team’s strategies and tactics related to harvest strategies at regional
fisheries management organizations (RFMO) in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian
oceans.
- Lead the team’s efforts related to management strategy evaluation (MSE),
including by running MSE models, proposing candidate harvest strategies, and
interpreting and scrutinizing results, as appropriate.
- Maintain a comprehensive and up-to-date understanding of relevant issues at
each RFMO and any evolution in the related science, technology, and policy.
- Research, draft and/or proof policy briefs and scientific issue briefs/papers to
advance program objectives. Draft and review external policy proposals and
white papers, as needed.
- Support the team’s communications efforts, drafting blogs, factsheets,
multimedia, and other web content.
- Develop and maintain relationships with decision makers, scientists, fishing
and seafood industry members, conservation groups and other constituencies
to partner on common objectives.
- Represent the program at scientific and policy meetings, multilateral fora, and
other events, as determined by the position’s supervisor, and report back to
the team on meeting proceedings. - Help to organize and run workshops, capacity building sessions, and webinars
on harvest strategy-related topics.
- Provide logistical and content support for contractors and others working in
support of the program.
Qualification Requirements
- Master’s degree required, doctoral degree preferred.
- At least four years of applicable experience, including with management
strategy evaluation (MSE) and/or population modeling. Should be fluent in R
or other similar programming language(s).
- Strong interpersonal skills, as well as oral and written communication skills,
including communicating complex scientific concepts to the public.
- Excellent computational, analytical and problem-solving skills, and highly
results-oriented.
- English fluency required. Additional competency in one or more of the
following languages is highly desirable: Spanish, French and Japanese.
Travel Requirements
Frequent domestic and international travel anticipated.
