YOUR POSITION WITH TNC
The Mexico Sustainable Watersheds Program Director works to achieve large-scale and impactful conservation initiatives to secure benefits for people and nature in relation to water & water security. Priority regions include Mexico City, Monterrey, Yucatan Peninsula and Chiapas, but this scope may broaden to address other regions. S/He advances TNCs agenda in Mexico, designing and implementing effective and impactful strategies to advance the goals of our shared conservation agenda: 1) Provide food and water sustainably, 2) Protect Oceans, Lands and Water and 3) Tackle Climate Change. A systemic approach, outstanding people management skills and knowledge of integrated watershed management and climate change are top required qualifications. S/He oversees all aspects of the Sustainable Watersheds Program. S/he will work under the supervision of the Mexico Conservation Director and coordinate with the Sustainable Landscapes and the Oceans Directors. S/he will receive input from different global programs and occasionally, will provide advice and support across the Latin American Region and other places. The position is preferably based in Mexico City, but other locations may be considered.
S/He an inspirational leader who uses TNC’s code of conduct and competencies as a baseline to lead by example. Dedicates time to set expectations, guide, coach and develop staff knowing that being a great leader is as important as the technical knowledge.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Implement the Mexico Sustainable Watersheds Program agenda according to a strategic vision and strong technical, social, political and financial support, to ensure achievement of strategic goals and objectives.
- Manage and coach the team to ensure a collaborative and productive working environment, in accordance with institutional values, guidelines and standards.
- Build and maintain the needed partnerships to accomplish ambitious goals, with strong emphasis on the private sector and corporations willing to reduce and mitigate their environmental impact.
- Implement the needed actions to advance watershed conservation initiatives in different geographies, in coordination with the Mexico team, regional and global Programs, following the priorities of our Shared Conservation Agenda and Iconic Places.
- Establish TNC as a major partner within the area of sustainable watersheds, water and biodiversity, water security and climate change, with strong emphasis on community development and public participation.
- Collaborate with the Development Team and the Conservation Director to consolidate funding opportunities.
- Manage a budget in close collaboration with Finance and the Conservation Director.
- Elaborate working proposals and reports for internal and external audiences.
- Advice and suggest key topics and messages to be shared with internal and external audiences.
RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE
- Update and implement a comprehensive strategy for the program, following TNCs methodologies and in coordination with the Mexico Conservation Programs (Sustainable Lands, Oceans and Climate change), Regional and Global Units.
- Coach, mentor, and develop staff, including overseeing new employee onboarding and supporting career development planning and opportunities following TNC’s Managerial excellence model.
- Build partnerships with government agencies, private sector and other NGOs, accordingly to the Sustainable Watersheds conservation strategy, in coordination with Conservation Director and Country Director.
- Ensure coordination and communication with the Conservation Director, Executive Director and other positions.
- Provide inputs to develop concepts and written proposals to leverage national and international, public and private funds.
- Provide information & updates through Mexico BU Leadership & agreed channels as part of regular updates to TNC Latin America Conservation Council (LACC).
- Make strategic use of global and regional capabilities at TNC seeking to maximize synergies to strengthen the Mexico Sustainable Watersheds Program, while also contributing expertise, experience and other resources whenever possible to the global and regional programs.
- Ensure impeccable management of the Program budget, including responsibilities such as tracking, adequate disbursement, financial sustainability and adequate application of financial procedures, among others.
- Prepare and attend periodic review meetings/reports as required by TNC and external partners.
- Participate in the Mexico Leadership Team.
- May work in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain, and under physically demanding circumstances.
- Make independent strategic decisions frequently based on analysis, ambiguous information, experience and judgment, managing up when required, ensuring coordination with Conservation Director and/or Mexico Country Director
- May require frequent travel domestically and/or internationally and occasional work outside of business hours in accordance with TNC & local guidelines.
- Maintain transparent, effective, timely & appropriate communication through department meetings, one-on-one meetings, email, IM (Instant Messaging), and regular interpersonal communication.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
- BA/BS degree on related fields and 7 years’ experience in watershed management, water conservation, community led conservation initiatives, and in similar conservation practice or positions.
- Impeccable relationships with relevant actors for watershed conservation in Mexico.
- Experience managing complex projects, including managing finances and coordinating the work of other professionals and partners.
- Proven supervisory experience, including motivating, leading, setting objectives and managing performance in teams of 3 or more members
- Experience in partnership development with different stakeholders, with strong emphasis on corporate engagement.
- Knowledge on water policy and governance in Mexico.
- Fundraising experience, with emphasis on writing proposals and reports, cultivating donors, and coordinating with development teams.
- Capacity to solve complex problems and comply with deadlines, independently and with minimal supervision.
- Optimistic and with outstanding people’s skills.
- Impeccable ethic and good judgement.
- Fluid and sufficient English skills in writing, speaking and listening.
- Be fully vaccinated for COVID19.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS
- Multi-lingual and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated.
- 7-10 years’ experience in conservation practice or equivalent combination of education and experience, including higher education degrees
- Experience working with the private sector.
- Demonstrated experience influencing, developing and implementing watershed conservation initiatives.
- Communicating clearly via written, spoken, and graphical means in English and other relevant languages.
- Politically savvy.
- Versatile and willing to learn.
- Optimistic and with outstanding people’s skills.
- Willingness and capacity to develop the team’s talent.
- Able to work in team, but also to work with limited supervision.
- Able to hold the course in complex or even adverse situations.
