The Mission to Seafarers seeks a part-time Seafarers’ Centre Assistant to support the smooth operation of our Seafarers’ Centre in Belfast.
Working closely with the Centre Manager and Port Chaplain, you’ll welcome visiting seafarers to the Centre, build supportive relationships, and respond to their needs appropriately. Day-to-day duties include operating bar services and the gift shop, handling currency exchange transactions, facilitating transportation for seafarers using branch vehicles, and undertaking ship visits. You’ll assist seafarers in accessing financial services for sending money home, liaise with MtS personnel and external agencies where follow-up support may be required in onward ports, and work with the Port Chaplain to provide swift and effective assistance during emergencies, liaising with port authorities and other relevant bodies as needed.
This part-time role is worked Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Saturday 4:00pm to 10:00pm, and Friday 10:00am to 6:00pm. The ideal candidate will be an effective communicator with strong listening skills, a friendly and supportive disposition, and the ability to build relationships and trust quickly. Proficient IT skills including Microsoft Office, good numeracy and literacy, and a full, clean UK driving licence are required. Some knowledge of the maritime industry is desirable.
