The Mission to Seafarers seeks to appoint a new Chair of the Board to provide outstanding leadership of our Board of Trustees.

For over 165 years, we have been committed to the practical, emotional, and spiritual support to the world’s seafarers and their families. Today, operating in more than 200 ports in fifty countries, we support the world’s 1.89 million seafarers of all ranks, nationalities, and beliefs.

We seek an exceptional, strategic leader to lead our Board and to work closely with our Secretary General and executive team as we work towards our strategic objectives. This appointment represents a unique and compelling opportunity to help shape the future of a well-respected charity with deep heritage and global impact. The maritime industry is facing rapid change, and the new Chair will be key in guiding The Mission to Seafarers through its next strategic chapter, ensuring our services remain relevant and effective worldwide.

The successful candidate will succeed our current Chair upon their retirement in April 2026.

Key Focus of the Role
The Chair will:

  • Lead an engaged and high-calibre Board of Trustees, ensuring strong governance, accountability, and effectiveness.
  • Support the Secretary General in their leadership of the global Mission, providing oversight and advice.
  • Represent the Mission externally, upholding our values and strengthening key partnerships across the maritime and welfare sectors.

Essential Competencies and Experience
We are seeking candidates who can demonstrate:

  • Proven governance and Board leadership experience, ideally as Chair, trustee, senior non-executive or executive.
  • Credible network within the maritime community, with knowledge of the maritime industry and insight into the work of the charity and the needs of seafarers.
  • A commitment to the Mission’s Christian ethos, values, and charitable purpose.
  • Strong strategic judgement, the ability to build consensus, and confident leadership of complex discussions.

Commitment
This is a voluntary, non-executive role. Reasonable access to London will be required for attendance at quarterly Board meetings and to represent the charity at events. Some international travel will be required. Reasonable expenses are reimbursed.
