Position Classification: Full-time, One-year position from August 1, 2025 – July 31, 2026

Benefits: Full benefits including health insurance through UC Davis.

Compensation: This internship will receive an annual salary of $50,183.00 through UC Davis.

Position Overview

The Intern Veterinarian position includes providing primary medical management and care of hundreds of stranded marine mammals, conducting post-mortem examinations and histological evaluation of deceased animals, developing and conducting a marine mammal health-based research project, medical record keeping, teaching veterinary student externs and other visitors, and some field work and response. This position is a shared and collaborative House Officer position with the University of California Davis of Veterinary Medicine.

This position is a one-year long, full-time, paid position. Housing is available at no cost to the intern in a shared unit located within 2 miles of the Center’s main hospital in Sausalito.

Key Responsibilities

• Work with a robust team of veterinary professionals and volunteers to provide primary care for stranded, debilitated marine mammals, mostly seals, sea lions, and sea otters, including assessment, treatment, husbandry, and critical care.

• Perform work with the pathology team to conduct post-mortem examination on deceased patients to investigate causes of death and disease processes.

• Contribute data and sample collection for marine mammal health research projects.

• Collaborate on multiple ongoing marine mammal health research projects and develop and conduct a unique research project during the internship.

• Contribute to instruction of visiting veterinary students and other veterinary professionals in marine mammal husbandry, medicine, and gross necropsy.

Qualifications and Experience

• DVM or equivalent degree from an accredited veterinary institution.

• One or more year(s) practicing clinical veterinary medicine is strongly preferred.

• Ability to obtain a California veterinary license.

• Valid driver license.

Physical Requirements

• Ability to stand, walk, climb stairs and lift and/or move up to 50 pounds throughout the primarily outdoor hospital for extended periods of time in variable weather conditions.

• Ability to physically restrain and interact with large and potentially dangerous marine mammals in the rehabilitation hospital setting.

• Hospital environment with use of potent anesthetic drugs, radiographic and other diagnostic procedures indoors and outdoors.

• Ability to remain in a stationary position for extended periods of time.

• Ability to operate a computer and other office equipment.

• Ability to walk/cover up to 5 miles during a shift on a frequent basis.

Work Environment

• Working in outdoor weather conditions and elements daily.

• Exposure to sharp instruments and needles.

• Risks associated with animal handling such as animal bites or scratches.

• Potential exposure to formalin.

• Potential exposure to allergens and zoonotic diseases.

• Involves strong smells associated with deceased animals and the care of animals.
