Island School Organization Overview

The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in Eleuthera, The Bahamas, was founded in 1999 to create and support transformational educational experiences with the mission of leadership effecting change. The diverse CEIS educational initiatives, including the Island School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, the Elementary Learning Center, and Community Outreach, deliver unique education in partnership with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research, sustainable development and innovation at the Cape Eleuthera Institute.

Educators work closely across programs, age groups, and departments, supporting students through interdisciplinary learning, shared supervision, and community events. Partnership Programs - Experiential Educator Overview

The Partnership Programs Department provides an environment for students and groups to engage in experiential, place-based learning and aims to instill a sense of place and leadership that enables them to make meaningful changes in their own communities. While the department primarily hosts school groups from the U.S., Canada, and Europe, we also serve local community partners including Deep Creek Primary School, Young Leadership Program, South Eleuthera Kids Camp, and visiting schools from Nassau. The Partnership Programs Director maintains a team of up to 9-11 full time staff including managers, educators, and interns, responsible for:

International Partnership Programs – Visiting school groups that range from 5th grade through post-doctoral field courses. The Island School currently has 750-1000 short course student visits to our campus per year.

Community Engagement Programs - works closely with program leaders at The Island School and local community members to coordinate and further opportunities for students to interact with the Island School community and the wider community of Eleuthera.

Job Summary

We seek educators with a demonstrated career commitment to experiential education and a love for teaching and learning. Experiential Educators are responsible for supporting year-round programming with International Visiting Programs and Community Engagement Programs.

During our international visiting programs, experiential educators are responsible for coordinating with trip planners and chaperones to organize and plan a tailored trip experience, as well as delivering programming when students arrive.

This position requires the ability to work long hours with a close-knit group of peers and live in an isolated community. This is an excellent opportunity for someone who wants to get valuable experience in organizing and delivering experiential learning programs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Plan and execute programs from start to finish, including identifying logistical needs (transportation, materials, scheduling, staffing, risk management) and ensuring all operational details are in place.
  • Work directly with visiting schools, external partners, and chaperones. Practicing clear, proactive communication, expectation setting, and relationship management.
  • Adjust plans quickly, respond calmly to last-minute changes, and make thoughtful decisions that maintain program quality and participant experience.
  • Design, create and maintain program curriculum and resources to continue enhancing partnership programs.
  • Deliver high quality programs and projects to create meaningful connections between students in The Island School Semester, Deep Creek Middle School, Deep Creek Primary School, and Elementary Learning Center
  • Deliver Community Engagement programs, including: DCPS after-school program, Swim Club, Young Leadership Program, Semester Buddy program, South Eleuthera Kids Camp, Apprentice program, etc
  • Teach basic courses in marine ecology, sustainable living, leadership and research
  • Serve as an instructor for tours on campus and around the island including snorkeling, biking, camping, sea kayaking, hiking, and community outreach
  • Create and deliver morning exercise programs
  • Assist in care and maintenance of shared equipment including, tents, kayaks, dorm supplies and bicycles
  • Oversee the well-being of students and their chaperones/instructors
  • Contribute to the daily functions and operations of our campus community (chores, farm, wetlab, dish crew, etc.)

Education

  • Must have a relevant Bachelor's or Master’s degree in education,expeditions, marine biology, biology, environmental science or a similar field
  • Teaching and/or youth mentorship experience, preferably in an experiential setting
  • Demonstrated experience creating engaging and thoughtful lesson plans independently
  • Prior experience coordinating educational and youth activities in a cross-cultural setting, serving students within low SES communities

Skills

  • A valid driving license is required for this position
  • Must be able to swim and be comfortable in water deeper than standing depth
  • Excellent interpersonal and written communication skills
  • Excellent leadership skills and demonstrated positive team influence
  • Adaptability to last-minute schedule changes
  • Effective at verbal communication at all levels with schools, parents, local organizations, and team members
  • Detail-oriented and able to juggle multiple projects at once
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office Suite and Google Suite (Drive, Gmail, Docs, Slides, and Sheets)

Schedule

This is a full-time agreement that spans three semesters (Fall, Spring, Summer). The Cape Eleuthera Island School and its related entities operate year round and program hours vary depending on needs. The successful candidate should expect, and desire to fully participate in a variable and mission driven schedule.
