Overview

The Island School, a not-for-profit organization based in The Bahamas, was founded to create and support transformational educational experiences with the vision of leadership effecting change, on the island of Eleuthera. The diverse educational initiatives, including our High School Semester and Summer Term, Deep Creek Middle School, Elementary Learning Center, and our Community Engagement and Partnerships, deliver unique educational journeys in conjunction with the authentic and meaningful work our organization undertakes in research and sustainable development at the Cape Eleuthera Institute, our research and innovation hub. We are reimagining what education is for, and redesigning how education is delivered.

Job Summary

The Summer Term Intern is responsible for assisting in facilitating the delivery of a 45-day high school semester program, developing and fostering meaningful relationships with students, while collaborating with other staff and interns to ensure a cohesive environment for all involved. The successful candidate will assist in mentoring Island School students for a six-week program. During this time, the interns will assist in a morning exercise program, assist in supporting camping and kayaking expeditions, and assist on residential duty each week.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Assist as a student advisor: provide mentoring to each student with the guidance of staff
  • Assist with the delivery of lessons whether in a classroom or expeditionary format when appropriate
  • Conduct residential duty on rotating faculty duty schedule and contribute to evening activities
  • Support expeditionary experiences
  • Assist students and staff in activities such as morning exercise, chores and community events
  • Other duties as assigned

Preferred Qualifications

  • Should have completed, be planning to complete, or in the process of completing an undergraduate degree in marine biology or education or relevant fields
  • Previous education or research experience and an active interest in marine conservation and environmental education
  • Able to put in long hours of work in a variety of programming in land, sea, and weather conditions
  • Must be in good physical condition and able to lead exercise programs
  • Boat driving experience, SCUBA certification, WFR certification and sea kayak experience will be helpful but not essential
  • Strong swimming skills and comfortable in water of all depths
  • Applicant should be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.

Fees

Interns are responsible for an internship fee of $1,200 per month. This includes: visa fees, shared dormitory style accommodation on campus, three meals a day in our on-campus dining hall, airport transfers from Rock Sound Airport (airport code ‘RSD’), on-campus internet, professional development, and networking activities. Based on program-specific schedules, interns may have the opportunity to experience kayaking, snorkeling, SCUBA diving, community outreach, and island exploration.
