Introduction
This job description applies to the vessel’s STO/ITO (Science & IT Officer)
The STO/IT officer takes responsibility for the day-to-day maintenance of all science research apparatus, computers, audio/visual and communications equipment and ensures its efficient operation. They report to the Chief Engineer as part of the engineering department.
Responsibilities: Maintenance of all IT systems & equipment, Implements Cyber Security, Development of IT protocols and improvements. Managers User Access to online systems and troubleshooting. Maintains specialist equipment for Oceanographic research missions.
Authority
- The Science and IT Officer holds administrator authority permissions over all IT systems in line with the ship and company requirements.
Key Responsibilities
IT & Systems Management
- Maintain and manage all onboard IT systems, portable devices, servers, and computers.
- Implement cybersecurity measures and develop IT protocols and improvements.
- Oversee user access, emails, and online systems.
- Maintain network infrastructure, ensure data security, and manage backups and firewalls.
- Install and upgrade software/hardware and keep detailed IT documentation.
Science & Research Support
- Act as Science Liaison between crew, science teams, and supernumeraries, assisting with planning and post-mission reporting.
- Operate and maintain specialized scientific equipment (e.g., multibeam sonar, CTDs, echosounders, submersible tracking systems).
- Ensure lab safety and proper use of shipboard science systems.
- Provide detailed documentation and cruise reports.
- Support deck operations and small boat work as needed.
General Duties
- Assist in emergency procedures and crew training.
- Prepare detailed handover notes for rotating colleagues.
- Foster a positive, respectful, and inclusive onboard working environment.
Qualifications & Experience
- Bachelor’s degree in Environmental/Marine Science, Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, or a related field.
- Strong IT background with systems administration experience.
- Familiarity with scientific research equipment is an asset.
- Ability to work in a collaborative, multicultural environment at sea.
