About Tetiaroa SocietyTetiaroa Society is a conservation nonprofit stewarding a 12-motu atoll in French Polynesia, operating in close partnership with The Brando resort. Role overviewThe Social Media Intern supports the Communications Manager in bringing Tetiaroa Society's story to life across our social channels, through content creation, community engagement, and creative formats that connect our audience to our conservation and cultural work. This is a working role on a small team. Your content will publish to real audiences, with supervision, feedback, and mentorship throughout. What you will learn- Building a digital content strategy around programmatic moments and the environmental calendar- Translating scientific and cultural source material into accurate, engaging content- Platform-specific craft with consistent organizational voice- Community management and escalation- Reading engagement data and using it to guide content- Ethical dimensions of conservation communications, including representation of indigenous culture and place-based storytelling Responsibilities- Build and maintain a day-to-day social media content calendar and create content around key dates/events- Day-to-day posting on ongoing strategic themes- Rework raw materials from group visits and events into polished posts, adapting message and tone for our audience- Create mood and story content for Instagram and other channels- Propose new, on-brand content ideas using our current strategy as a foundation- Support community management; respond to comments and messages; escalate donor, media, or sensitive inquiries- Design interactive content such as quizzes and challenges; support graphic design needs for social content- Monitor trends in conservation, ocean advocacy, and culture and bring ideas to the team- Contribute ideas collaboratively; assist in tracking engagement metrics Supervision and support- Weekly one-to-one check-in with the Communications Manager (30 minutes)- Onboarding period in the first three weeks with review before publishing; move to independent posting within an approved calendar once the voice is established- Two conversations across the placement with staff in conservation science, education and culture, or field station operations- Midterm and final written evaluation, suitable for submission to your institution Who this is forStudents and early-career individuals who are creative, comfortable engaging with online communities, and enjoy storytelling through social media, with an interest in nonprofit communications and social strategy. Genuine interest in ocean conservation and Polynesian culture will help you connect authentically with our audience. Skills & qualities- Comfortable using Canva and Adobe InDesign- Familiarity with Meta Business Suite for Instagram and Facebook publishing- Strong written communication and ability to shape raw information into clear, on-brand posts- Organized, able to manage a content calendar and respond to community activity promptly- Curious and proactive; interest in conservation, science communication, or Polynesian culture is a plus- Familiarity with our US-based audience is a plus If you are seeking academic creditIf your institution grants credit, we will provide a position description, a named site supervisor, midterm and final written evaluations, hour verification, and any required documentation.
