Fisheries Governance and Livelihoods Deputy Director

This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about finding real-world solutions to improving fishing and aquaculture and advancing sustainable seafood production.

The Deputy Fisheries Governance and Livelihoods Director (Deputy Director) will support the Fisheries Governance team with designing and implementing innovative solutions to tackle complex problems in fisheries, particularly focusing on underserved regions worldwide, especially within coastal states in the Global South.

The Deputy Director reports to and supports the Fisheries Governance Director, and their primary work portfolio includes:

  • Oversight of Fisheries Governance team functions
  • Oversight of staff and consultants executing projects
  • Policy and strategy development
  • Reporting and monitoring against internal and external targets
  • Engagement with fishery and supply chain stakeholders
  • Support the Fisheries Governance Director

Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

Strategy Development

  • Design of pilot projects and trials for domestic market operators to promote the adoption of sustainability and social well-being criteria and policies.
  • Actively contribute to policy and strategy development and plans to deliver improvements in wild-capture fisheries in key geographies identified in SFP’s strategic plan.

Management

  • Coordinate and oversee the development of annual work plans and budgets.
  • Oversee implementation of new and ongoing projects under the Fisheries Program, acting as budget holder as required.
  • Manage teams of staff and consultants in key geographies, including leading regular status meetings, advising on questions/concerns, guiding the development of implementation strategies, etc.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of the Domestic Markets program, including supporting the design, development, and implementation of Buyer Engagement programs in key domestic markets.
  • Monitor the department’s performance against programmatic targets, including grant and non-grant-related work, and develop innovative solutions to obstacles.
  • Review staff and program director reports to ensure they meet all guidelines and deadlines.
  • Advise staff and consultants regarding designing and implementing innovative tools and solutions to engage the lower echelons of the seafood supply chain.
  • Advise on sustainability trends and edge solutions that help team members maximize opportunities and overcome challenges.

Liaison

  • Support the Development team by identifying funding opportunities and developing project proposals that are aligned with SFP’s corporate strategy.
  • Work with fishery stakeholders, management authorities, supply chain actors, local NGOs, and other stakeholders to design seafood sustainability improvement strategies.
  • Act as senior technical advisor to SFP’s Markets team regarding small-scale fisheries and fisheries policy, engagement strategies, and principles involving international buyers.
  • Act as senior advisor to SFP staff and consultants regarding stakeholder engagement to support improvements via FIPs, public-private partnerships, or other strategies. This includes mobilizing relevant supply chains to ensure FIPs have enough market support.
  • Work closely with the FishSource team to update sustainability performance metrics to report progress to stakeholders and motivate supply chains and complex Global South fisheries to action.
  • Work closely with SFP’s Markets and Supply Chain Roundtable teams to ensure the Global North industry supports improvement initiatives in key fisheries.
  • Collaborate across SFP to ensure key stakeholders, such as NGOs, supply chain partners, and the catch sector, are regularly and accurately updated on the work of SFP’s Fisheries Governance team.

Representation

  • Attend seafood shows, sustainability conferences, and other events as necessary to communicate SFP’s work to stakeholders, provide seafood sustainability training, share lessons learned, and raise awareness of SFP’s unique approach to using market influence to promote change in fisheries sustainability.
  • As required, represent the Fisheries Governance Department in ad hoc and regular meetings with existing project partners and agencies and manage external relationships with relevant stakeholders.
  • Represent SFP to politicians, regulators, and industry at the highest level.

Essential Qualifications and Skills:

  • Master's degree in fisheries or aquaculture-related subject or equivalent experience
  • 10+ years’ cumulative experience working in the seafood industry
  • Prior leadership experience in improving fisheries management and marine conservation.
  • Strong project management skills.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information with strict confidentiality.
  • Excellent analytical skills.
  • Excellent organizational and interpersonal skills.
  • Excellent communication skills in English and French (speaking, reading, and writing).
  • Demonstrable team management experience with experience managing diverse and geographically dispersed remote teams preferred.
  • Ability to work within a framework of responsibilities, objectives, and deadlines without (or with limited) in-person supervision.
  • Ability to work comfortably and effectively in a remote environment; adequate work-from-home arrangements.
  • Global cultural awareness to work and communicate effectively with diverse colleagues.
  • Scheduling flexibility to facilitate interactions with globally dispersed colleagues.
  • Have a solid practical knowledge of productivity software and platforms (i.e., Google Suite, Word, Excel, email, and other standard business communication tools) and the ability to learn new technology quickly.

Additional Comments/Desirable Qualities:

  • Development: Experience working with development agencies and/or multilateral grant experience.
  • NGO/nonprofit experience: Good understanding of the global seafood sustainability movement, good relations with the leading seafood sustainability NGOs, and prior nonprofit experience in marine conservation.
  • Emotional intelligence and professionalism: A high skill level in navigating relationships with the Fisheries Governance Director, CEO, board members, and senior leaders.
  • Analytical and research skills: The ability to support the Fisheries Governance Director and CEO with relevant insights and analysis, especially if needed for meetings, presentations, or strategic planning.
  • Flexibility: Willingness to work outside standard hours when required and effectively manage time-sensitive tasks.

Duration/Level of Effort:

This is a full-time, remote staff position (40 hours per week) and starts immediately.

Compensation

Commensurate with experience and determined within the guidelines of the national and regional labor laws governing your location.
