Are you an experienced fisheries technician looking for a new challenge? Do you have experience operating boats?

Perform advanced technical scientific duties, independently executing established and new sampling procedures, and train and direct technicians in sampling Puget Sound fisheries.

Test fish and conduct boat surveys for winter and summer recreational salmon fisheries, as well as creel sample for lingcod, halibut, shrimp, salmon, and other marine fish or shellfish species primarily in the spring.

This is an opportunity to pilot WDFW research vessels to conduct test fishing and boat surveys.

With your experience, you will estimate catch and effort statistics for commercial and recreational fisheries management.

You are excited to collect additional catch or biological information for salmon, marine fish, or shellfish as needed.

Duties

Here is some of what you will be doing:

Conduct test fishing and angler effort surveys (boat surveys) in multiple Marine Areas of Puget Sound, including but not limited to Marine Areas 5, 6, 9 and 12:

  • Operate outboard and inboard/outboard motorboats, including trailering and docking, in all types of weather conditions.
  • Perform minor routine maintenance on the boat, motor, trailer, and test fishing equipment.
  • Operate GPS, depth finder, AIS, VHP, and electronic data collection devices.
  • Train and direct seasonal technicians assigned to test fish on sampling processes and procedures, fish and shellfish identification, use of sampling equipment and electronic data collection devices.
  • While test fishing, sample the catch to obtain stock composition (DNA), age structure (scales), length information (legal and sublegal) and hatchery/wild proportions (mark-status).

Sample recreational fisheries for salmon, halibut and other marine fish, and shellfish catch to determine catch per unit effort and species composition in order to obtain valid sport catch estimates for salmon and marine fish:

  • Interview as many recreational fishery anglers as possible at assigned boat launch facilities, marina, and shore-based fishing locations.
  • Classify, sort, and enumerate marked tagged, marked untagged, unmarked tagged, and unmarked untagged salmon.
  • Retrieve snouts with CWTs from Chinook and Coho to determine stock specific impacts for fisheries modeling. Sample recreational salmon catch biological data including DNA, age units, and sex ratios.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

  • Work Setting, including hazards:
    • Work is done both inside/outside, during inclement weather, rough water, noise, odors, repetitive movements of hands, finger manipulations, long periods of squatting, walking, boating, climbing in and out of boats, sampling salmon in a boat, carrying, kneeling, lifting (40 lb. max), working in a confined space, fish blood and slime, slippery surfaces, while wearing rain gear, equipment holsters, personal floatation devices (PFD), biting and stinging insects, and use of knives.
    • Must be able to negotiate water in emergency situations.
  • Schedule:
    • Schedule is 24/7 (non-scheduled).
    • 8-10 hours per day usually between 5 a.m. and 11 p.m. 40 hours per week.
    • Weekend and evening work require.
  • Travel Requirements:
    • Puget Sound area.
    • Seldom overnight travel.
  • Tools and Equipment:
    • Outboard motorboat operation including proper and safe fueling, boat trailer, GPS, compass, data logger, fishing tackle and gear including downriggers, computer, pick-up trucks, cell phones, electronic sampling equipment, weighing scale, VHF radio, AIS, Radar, calculator, knives, PFD, marine survival suit, rubber boots, rain gear, agency identifying clothing, wand, and tunnel CWT detectors.
  • Customer Interactions:
    • Interact with the general public during data collection and provides basic information regarding fish resources as well as agency programs and activities. Provide sport fishing regulatory information to the public. Some contact with those who may be angry, distraught, or frustrated. Liaison to regional supervisor on fishery violations observed in the field.
Qualifications

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including 1 year of high school science, and four (4) years of experience as a Scientific Technician.
Or

  • Graduation from high school or GED, including 1 year of high school science, and four (4) years of or field experience as an assistant to a health or safety professional, biologist, chemist, or zoologist.

Please note: College course work involving major study in biology, zoology, fisheries, chemistry, natural sciences, or closely allied field will substitute year for year for experience, provided the course work includes at least 6 semester or 9 quarter hours of natural or environmental science classes.

Certifications/Licenses:
  • Valid driver’s license.
Special Requirements/Conditions of Employment:
  • Successful completion of agency training and/or certification for assigned watercraft is dependent on supervisory direction, position need, and training availability.
  • Obtain Basic First Aid and CPR with AED certification within six (6) months of hire.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Twelve (12) months or more experience fishing for salmon in Puget Sound or equivalent area.
  • Twelve (12) months or more experience sampling fisheries in Puget Sound.
  • Experience with basic maintenance of vessels and trailers.
  • Safe operation of vessel at times in adverse weather conditions in the Puget Sound and proficient use of typical marine electronics (e.g., GPS, depth finder, radar, radio).
  • Excellent attention to detail and good communication skills.
  • Accurately identifies all salmon species, crab and shrimp species, and common marine fish species in Puget Sound.
  • Familiar with salmon life history and sport fishing regulations.
  • Knowledge of commercial and sport fishing methods and gear.
  • Minimum six (6) months operating 16’-28’ length motorized vessels in marine waters such as the Puget Sound or equivalent area.
  • Competent in fishing for salmon from a vessel.
